I recently purchased a new 2010 American Deluxe Jazz Bass. However, I noticed that the first three digits of the serial number are from 2009 (DZ9). Does anyone have any thoughts of why the numbers don't match up? I am completely positive that it is a 2010. It has the new redesigned neck, electronics, etc.

Well, you always have to give it about a year's leeway when dating an instrument from the serial number. Dating is imprecise at best. My Am. Std. Jazz was bought new in March '09, the serial number is a Z8xxxxxx, it could be either an '07 0r an '08. My guess it's likely one made late in '08, because I got it so early in '09.

The necks are already made and stamped in advance. The necks are used until the stock is exhausted. It's not unusual to get a new bass with a year old serial number. I've had that several times.

That's good to know. I've had the same number confusion trying to figure out a year for some friends' basses.

I guess I figured that since the bass had so many changes for 2010, the serial number would reflect the model year.

Fender model years run July 1 through June 30. They run on fiscal years, not calendar years. ALWAYS have. So a 2010 bass could be 2009/2010 or 2010/2011. Think fiscal years not calendar years. Hope that helps you sort it out.
