Hello, everyone! I know that the basses made in 1978 have a serial number of S8 + 5 digits. I am looking to buy a Jazz Bass 78 that have a serial number of S8 + 6 digits! Has anyone ever seen such an bass? This was common at this time or the bass is false? Thanks!

Hi! I have a 78 Fender Jazz Bass, its S88 + 5 digits, so its technically S8+6!
And i am about to sell no, but no idea about the price...

Location: In the pocket north of Washington D.C.
All kinds of variations may have occurred in the serial number configurations of these basses.

Please post pictures because there are usually other features of the bass that will help to date it.

A 78 Jazz should have block neck inlays and a bullet truss rod with a 3 bolt neck mounting. Shaller tuners should be standard but they wil be marked "Fender".
These tuners are of a better quality than the nickel plated elephant ear tuners of the 69-76 years of production.

In 1977 Fender went to black pickguards as standard for all instruments.
Most 77- to 79 Bases have black pickguards unless they were a custom color which may have had white.
There were no Tortoise shell PGs used by Fender during this time frame.
