Hi
I just bought my first Fender after fiddling around thinking about a couple of models. I picked up a Geddy Lee Jazz, used, for what seemed to be an irresistible deal.

After reading something from a local shop about having Fender stamped tuners, and seeing any pics online showed the stamp plus there is a slightly different screw assembly (not the tuning screw but the tuner assembly screw), I got to wondering about the authenticity.

Neck seems good with a Crafted in Japan, s/n S015028. All other pics match, it's got the BAII.

Were all GLs made with the stamped tuners?

Thanks

Yep, that is what all the pictures indicate and that has me a little concerned.

I don't think I was clear in my OP. The tuners on this one do NOT have the Fender stamp. Everything else seems to fit the GL though.

Here are front and back pics.

I have never in my life tagged an image like this. I hope it works. Nonetheless, the album should be entirely public.

This an example of everything I have seen. See the logo on the broad piece of the tuner.

Thanks Apinheiro
They will not be of any use. It was a pawn shop. Even if they knew something I'd expect that they wouldn't tell me.

I came here hoping to get a Fender expert. I recognize that specifications, etc. are subject to change without notice and that maybe one day or week or month, the stamped tuners may not have been available OR that for whatever reason someone along the way ripped off and replaced. Seems that the effort to do that outweighs the minimal cost-savings over buying new, but who knows.

Could it be that a previous owner changed out the stock tuners for non-Fenders?

Yeah, I have considered that. Not sure why. They'd have been veryvery costly tuners. E.G. Worst case scenario....

Buddy buys GL for something like $1000. Buddy decides to sell the thing to a pawn shop, which by my estimation gave him $350 based on their original $700 selling price. Off the shelf tuners cost, what?, $50-60? Looks like the originals are a bit over $100. so, he takes a bath of $650 to get some tuners to save $60? Doesn't sound right, unless he just wanted to cut losses when he/she decided to get rid of the guitar.

I am sure they'll work just fine and if I ever get the urge to "restore" it, the tuners are available.

Just looking on the BasspartsResource.com website, and they have official "Genuine Fender" tuners (made by Gotoh) for the Geddy Lee models made prior to '08, and as best I can tell from the closeup pic, they do not have the Fender stamp on them. They're blank.
As far as I could tell by the s/n you gave, yours is probably a '94-'95, so that's probably all it is.

Thanks
Fender.com indicates the model was introduced in 1998. The serial number map on F.com is pretty darned hard to read, but I have read elsewhere that the neck from which I got the ser. no. was possibly made in 2008.

The guitar seems to be very very new, at very least very lightly used. This is based on fret wear, as assessed by my guitar tech friend.

Yeah, it can be tricky dating these things, parts of it could have been made in '07 and others in '08. They say the most accurate way to date them is to check the date stamped in the neck pocket, which, of course involves removing the neck, not something most will want to do. I suspect it's simply that the tuners are whatever tuners for the GL models they still had from'07 when they put yours together in '08. Nothing suspect there. It's still within the general timeframe that they were using the unstamped pre '08 tuners.
