I am curious about what ear protection people are using on small gigs. I have been playing bass in many different settings over the years, and as the output of amps has risen it seems to be a better idea all the time to protect what hearing I have.

I currently am using some orange foam ear plugs that are leftovers from my symphony days. They work well except that they have a tendency to pop loose when I sweat. Also they just don't seem up to the task of fighting off the sound barrage of a typical club date. I also tried some soft rubber ones that were intended for industrial use around machinery. They worked a little too well in that they cut all the sound too much.

So, Fender fans, any suggestions?

I use the orange foam ear plugs too. You have to mash them and really insert them far into your ear canal for them to stay in place.

The best ear plugs are going to be those that youwould get from an audiologist making an impression of your ear canals and making custom pugs for your needs. They are well worth it if you want the best.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I wound up buying some of the plunger type ear plugs from Guitar Center for about $15. They are a better alternative to the foam in that they fit better and are specifically made to cut volume without cutting balance, which can be a problem with the foam ones. I found that I could hear well without being stone deaf, plus I didn't have to keep pushing them back in as with the foam ones.
