Hey guys and gals, I am a newbie to the bass part of this forum. I have played bass off and on for 25 years. Man, that makes me feel old. LOL. I also play guitar. I have been trying to get in a band for a while now and in my area everybody needs bass players, so I traded in my guitars and amp for a FENDER GEDDY LEE JAZZ BASS and a FENDER RUMBLE 100. I already have a try out with a local band and am hoping for the best. Please wish me luck.
I would love to hear what has been happening in the bass world.
I started playing bass in the '80's hair metal days. I am a huge RUSH fan, GEDDY LEE is my favorite bass player.

Good luck with the audition and welcome to the FC forum. You'll find a smorgasbord of information and opinions here......some of it actually applicable to music and musical instruments.

I'm a guitarist personally but my brother plays the bass and I have a healthy respect for all who lay down the foundation for building the sonic "house".

I hope you make friends and meet some kindred spirits here.

PINKRUSHFLOYD....sounds like a tribute band. Anyway, GOOD LUCK at the try out. With a quarter century of plucking the magic metal you should do fine.

The thing about the bass world is, it goes round and round...and comes out through a big speaker cab behind you. Things do change, but tend to run in circles or cycles. Right now the trend is beat up old looking basses that sound brand new and cost more than my Florida timeshare. I tend to avoid trends and stick to proven things.

Welcome to the forum. You'll get so many opinions here that one of them is bound to be right!

Where is this magical land where there is a shortage of bassists? LOL. Around here it seems there is a bunch of bassists, guitarists and drummers all looking for keyboardists and horns.

Nice choice of an instrument and rig. I tried the Rumble 2x10 out for one club gig and was really impressed. REALLY. Just too heavy to move by myself on a gig to rehearsal to gig basis. I'm 56 yrs old and I've been playing (or trying to) since 1968.

Thank you.
I know one thing that has changed in bass playing, now everybody is using multi-10 inch speakers. Back when I was playing bass, everybody was using 15 inch or bigger.
The FENDER RUMBLE that I just bought has 2 10 inch speakers and a horn. I love the sound of it. It has a tone and sound that I could never achieve before.
What are your opinions on this?

Not everybody, PRF......

This is my brother. He's "old school" (like me) and insists on nothing but vintage amps for the vibe and the sounds we both grew up listening to. He has a "museum" of vintage Sunn and Acoustic gear to choose from to suit the mood and the venue.

I really am loving the sound of this new FENDER RUMBLE 100 2X10 amp. The sound of this amp has a wide range, I can get that GEDDY LEE sound that I wanted so bad for so long. I happily recommend this amp and the FENDER GEDDY LEE JAZZ BASS has alot to do with it too. This bass plays smooth as butter and has an awesome tone. I love playing bass, I didn't realize how much I missed it.
Also, thank you for the wishes of luck, and I got in the band! We have about a month until our first gig, so I have alot of material to learn. I am loving it!

Congrats on passing the audition. The older you get the harder it is to get accepted in a band, unless everyone else is a geezer too! LOL

My thoughts on 10's. I rehearse with a full band with a single 10 inch speaker in a combo amp with 75 watts of power. You can hear it fine but you don't feel it. I gig with a combination stack of 1x15 and 2x10 and a 450 watt amp. That you do feel, but mainly it functions as a glorified monitor because I'm patched out to a PA which has a pair of huge subs. The 1x15 alone or the 2x10 alone just doesn't sound as good but together they compliment each other very well and delivers a very balanced sound. I've always had a 15 in the mix since day one at gigs. I used to play with a pair of 2x15 Ampeg cabs in the late 60's and 70's. Downsized from there. I like today's compact lightweight Neo cabs and a big amp for gigging with a full band, but you know I could take the little 1x10 amp, use it for a monitor, patch to the PA and it would probably work. Just too vain to do that. I really like the rumble coming from behind me. I like old school bass tone a lot. I mean thick tone that moves a lot of air.

Someone mentioned SUNN bass amps. The Sunn tube amps were amazing and if you have one keep it. I messed up bad by selling a Sunn 2000S about 18 years ago thinking I'd find something lighter and better. I haven't yet. But that thing was way heavy and I was looking to get lighter. I guess there was a reason it weighed what seemed like 99 lbs.

Back in the day, I had a PEAVEY TKO65 with a 15 inch scorpion speaker and that thing weighed a ton. Our huge PEAVEY PA speakers were heavy as all get out, they had 15's and big old horns and 2 cabs had 2x12's and 1x18 each. all heavy stuff. That was in the 80's hair metal days and excessive amplification was a must. LOL. It was a good thing we were young.LOL :D
