I recently did a video review on a 2001 US Jazz that I thought I would keep around:

Then I got my hands on a 1975 Jazz!!

I do believe the 75 is a KEEPER!! It's such a great sounding instrument!! I've used it on a few gigs just going direct with no amp and just a wedge to hear myself...it ROCKS!! Here's a short clip of a tune that I recorded at a church service I played last weekend. I'm the guy to the left and the sound you hear is just a wedge, no amp.

If anyone has some clues as to the finish, please let me know. It has faded from blue to green under the bridge pup cover and chipped on the back.

Hello,

Been watching your vids on youtube great instructional on slap I also play in a worship band covering more CCM more of a pop rock band. Well I really like the gospel sound yet I am not there yet your video really inspires me to seek it out more. I love Martha Munizzi Israel Houghton Ricardo sanchez. Keep posting videos and instruction on this I can really use the help. Question how do you eq your bass/amp to get the response you need for slap.Any and all suggestions welcomed.

Thanks LowDown!! I have a great time shooting the vids!! I will keep posting them for sure. As far as tone for slap....I almost always keep everything flat on my amp eq-wise and really rely on my bass and my hands to get my tone. I'd say 50% of the gigs I do I'm going direct, so my hands better make my bass sound the way I want it to sound. Sounds a bit cliche, but if you trust your hands to make your bass sound great you'll be able to concentrate on the music instead of fighting a soundguy or an amp to get your tone. A really good DI with some tone shaping will help too, the Aguilar Tone Hammer is excellent. Hope this helps!!

Hello,
Thanks for responding I use a sansamp bass driver and have it set up to model an ampeg amp. Never heard of using your hands for tone if thats what you mean. Would you mind talking about this more cause I do get frustrated with soundguys and cutting thru the mix at times when playing at different events. Once again thanks for responding, by the way is saddleback the one with pastor Rick Warren?

Yes, it's the church with Rick Warren.
I definitely think that tone starts with your hands. The instrument your playing has a lot to do with your sound too and so does your amp. Most of the times you're going to be at the mercy of sound guys so you have to be confident in your abilities to make your instrument sound good. When it comes to amplification I run everything flat and if I need a little tweak I'll make micro adjustments to my amps eq, but I rarely use the amps eq. You can really make your bass sound different depending on where you play. For example, playing over the neck or bridge pickup, closer to the bridge or closer to the neck, or which pick up you're using, neck or bridge, or both with one backed off a little more.

Pinkrushfloyd-Thanks!! Its a great bass..I love it!!

Lowdown-The SansAmp and the Aguilar ToneHammer are two different beasts for sure. The SansAmp is gritty and emulates an SVT, I love the SansAmp tone!! The Aguilar ToneHammer is very clean, it also has a really nice overdrive too that is selectable. If you're playing a head such as an SVT and putting a SansAmp in front of it, you might be getting too much distortion, I don't mean full metal/overdriven distortion, but that nice pillowy tube distortion. Maybe try going straight into your amp without the SansAmp in front and run stuff flat and see is that helps...

That was my next Question about running my sansamp into my amp and then direct out into pa system. You answered that now can I still utilize my MXR compression pedal straight into amp then XLR out to the board? I really feel compression tightens up the tone and keeps things nice and tidy. What are your thoughts on compression?

THANKS IN ADVANCE
