Hi there,

I recently purchased a used MIM J Bass, and while I'm pleased with the tone and feel of the instrument, I'm surprised that my beginner Squier bass is louder and even punchier. I have to crank up my amp a bit to get to an equal volume.

All the electronics are working.

I would think that the J Bass would be a hotter bass, but mine's not. Are the standard MIM J Bass pickups usually replaced for this reason? I have read that the pickups in even the MIM basses are fine. Any thoughts or fixes (besides an expensive pickup upgrade)?

If you like the tone then just turn up the amp input gain. Pickup design is a balance of many factors and output level is just one of them. The pickups might be quieter but they might also have a more balanced tone, especially in the mid frequency range.

I agree with dberriff. You may be getting better tone from the MIM. That's harder to come by than volume.

Agreed, IMO, pickup height can be important to volume. I had a 78 P-bass, when I bought it, the pup was pretty much all the way down parallel with the pickguard, at some point much after I bought it I finally adjusted the pickup height according to Fender factory specs, and it made a big difference in not only volume but it improved the tone tremendously. I would look into that if I were you.

My Squier VM Modified Jazz blows my MIM FSR Precision away as far as volume and power, but, The Precision has the tone, pure Fender. It has an ash body that looks, feels and sounds good. The "Designed by" Seymour Duncan pups are extremely hot and are hard to beat.

What I do notice is, there isn't the warmth with the Squier that I have with my Precision. The Precision is all personality and the Squier performs.

It's hard to put into words. I will tell you that the Squier is my backup, not that I've ever needed it but, I know it's always ready.

Naturally the Squier VM is made up of maple from neck to body... so as expected it has the brightness.. and a bit lacking in warmth but that can be covered up by replacing pickups that are hotter or flatwounds..
