Hi Fellow Fender Pros!

My wife is getting me a 50th Anniversary Jazz Bass for my 60th birthday in July (Whatta GAL!) and she wants to customize it for me with all Gold-plated parts and a more appropriate pickguard. The pickguard and screws are no prob, but how do I even START going about finding the exact fits for the gold tuners, bridge, strap knobs, Bridge and Pickup covers, etc.? I did this years ago for my '62 strat reissue but I remember it being a nightmare. Should I call Fender and talk to a rep or......??

Thanks VERY much in advance!

Why would you want to substantially de-value a $2,000 instrument with non-stock parts?

My advice would be to do the gold hardware/new pickguard thing on a different bass, but hey, it's yours to do with as you please, I suppose.

Most of the required gold bling can be found on Ebay. However, gold tuners may pose a problem in that you may not be able to find the exact match for the instrument's existing tuners and you may have to drill new screw holes in the headstock to mount those that are available.

Best of luck, HTH

Yeah, that's what I thought. I am totally ok leaving it 100% stock, but the Mrs. wanted to put her touch of oppulance on it. I will let her read your contributions and I am sure she will let my new bass stay as intended. Thanks a bunch guys!

I would think that sufficient opulence would be conveyed in her purchase of the instrument for you.

Good move, in my opinion. It's a lovely bass as is.

tell the bride that her touch of oppulence is buying it in the first place.....

to "bling" it would be a serious denegration to a beautiful collectors item....
(kinda like putting 20" rims and a hood scoop on a '57 T-Bird)

Try Bass Parts Resource here:
http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/middle_bass.htm

They should have everything you need. Direct replacement tuners, bridges, strap buttons, jack plates, and all.
And, as far as some saying you shouldn't be altering a collector's item, it's your bass, do what you want with it.
Screw collectibility.
I personally think the 50th anniversary Jazz bass will look really nice with gold hardware.

That's exactly what the collectors like to hear.

I agree. But why ruin the collectibility of a $2,000 bass (ahem, street price) to get something blinged? Buy a red jazz bass and throw gold parts on it. Done for less than $1,000.
