Hello all
I just bought my dream bass, a jazz. Problem is for some reason it makes an irritating buzzing noise when I touch the strings. I didn't notice this in the store. I changed cords, unplugged stuff around it and I'm still getting the buzz sound. My other basses and guitars don't have this problem. Only the jazz. Any ideas what to do besides take the dang thing back? Thanks.

i had the same issue on my J at a friends place and switching from one AC wall socket to a different one across the room solved it.... maybe a poorly grounded outlet?

I appreciate all the advice. Tried a different socket, but no luck. If i put my pinky on the bridge and forfinger on the metal by the knobs, it kills the buzz. I reckon something isn't grounded out so I'm going to get it looked at next week. Thank aagain for all help.

Definately sounds like a grounding problem. Check all the wires and solder joints. Also check the wire under the bridge.

check the wire joints - has nothing to do with sockets

That happened on my jazz last summer, plugged in, and started getting a nasty hum from the horn on my 210 extension cab. Also picked up 1180AM radio...for some reason that always seems to be the one that bleeds over if it happens, no matter what kind of electronic device I'm dealing with. (anyone know why?) Anyway, I immediately yanked the control plate and plugged in the soldering iron thinking the ground had come loose... Turned out something had gone bad with the wiring in the entire house. Electrician had to come do some work. So that could always have something to do with it, but since you say your other basses don't do it, I have to agree with the other posters, it's mostly likely a very quick and easy fix within the control cavity.

I'm thinking that the guitar is not at fault.

Try the following until you get it fixed:

1) Make sure you're grounded properly by either plugging into a 3-prong outlet, or using a proper 3-prong adapter

2) Try a different amp

3) Try a different location (one free of neon beer signs, incandescent lighting, etc.)

4) Try a different guitar cord (btw: make sure the socket on your bass is clean and tight)

5) If your amp is older, and has a two-position flip switch for power, try throwing the switch in the opposite direction from what you normally do.

If none of these work, stop playing the bass in the shower ;)

If none of these work, stop playing the bass in the shower - Thats funny.

I have an old Fender B100 head. The dang thing sounds great through it, no buzzing if that makes any sense. Just not enough power. With my other amps, I just started turning the volume way down on the bass and up at the amp. Didn't cure it, but makes it managable. Now I'm looking for a new Fender amp. Any suggesions?

I own a MIM standard J bass (passive pups) soon to be upgraded to USA pups.
I only get hum if I have the volume & tones wound way too high, I agree with the other posts to turn vol & tones down. Could be your mains, but if all fail I'd take the bass back to whom you purchased from as you maybe covered by warrenty. All The Best.

I solved the problem. I got rid of it. Next time I'll spend more time looking for the right bass, not buy the first one I fall in love with.
