I prefer maple for a fretted bass and ebony for fretless. That's me and my opinion. Maple is very much brighter. I have two 2008 American Standard Jazz basses, one maple, one rosewood and the maple one has a more in your face slap tone. Maple needs a finish and is more expensive to refret, though I once owned a 13 year old maple fretboard and the frets were still going strong so it isn't a deciding factor. Ebony also is tougher to refret due to it's tendency to chip. I find I need to give rosewood a little lemon oil once in a while to keep it from drying out. Try different finger boards for yourself and see. Try a full wenge neck like the older Warwicks and hear what that's like too. On my fretless there is no finish so I use a gun stock oil that polishes up nicely; I got the idea from an article by Rick Turner.

Maple isn't better or worse, it's just a matter of preference...
