I'm having an issue with my MIM Jazz Bass neck. If I adjust the the neck for a small amount of bow (concave) and set the saddle height according to specs, after it isn't played for a few weeks, I seem to have some fret buzz on the D string around the 7th to 10th fret. Being primarily a guitar player that sets his action low, do I need to set saddle height higher or add more concave bow or both,or...could I have a high fret. I have always heard a Bass neck should be almost dead straight. Again,I might be setting the action a little to low for Bass. This is my first one. Any opinions?

Since no one else has pitched in:

I'm no expert but out of necessity have set up my own basses for the last few years.

Have you seen this?: http://www.fender.com/support/bass_guit ... _guide.php

I have followed the standard settings and they work pretty well for my G&L and Fender basses. I also have the right tools. A small steel rule, capo, feeler-gauge and correct allen-key.

12 thou relief at the 8th fret is about right. The usual warning applies here: if you are not confident about truss rod adjustment then leave it alone. It is an area where you should make small changes and let the neck settle after each.

I find that 3/32 [E] down to 2.5/32 [G] at the 17th fret works for my style as a start [my steel rule does not have 64's so I just graduate the height by eye]. I might nudge the bridge screws up a 1/8 turn if a string rattles a bit too much anywhere. Sometimes you might get a bit of string rattle that you cannot hear through the amp. Ever since I watched a Victor Bailey video on YouTube and his strings were rattling like crazy when un-amplified I have not worried so much.

Finally, don't expect to get your action as low as your guitar's. Bass playing tends to be a bit more "physical" in my experience so the strings need a bit more breathing space. Why else do I finish a gig drenched in sweat? Enjoy. :)
