Well, the basses you have now seem to be pretty nice, so I suppose you didn't do too badly.

I actually did damn good. The 4003 played through the Hartke today. WOW! Both basses played great with the same settings. Everything is playing great together.

That's good that everything seems to be working out, and you finally got some time in with the Ric to try it out with the Hartke rig. 8)

The Ric is showing more lower tones through the Hartke than I believe I was able to achieve in another gear. But then again, I do stand by my statement when I acquired this 4003, it in it's self has a better tone, and playability than any other Ric I've had. As we know, there aren't two Axes alike. At least this one sounds very agreeable to my playing, and failing hearing. Image

Rics can do that, especially with flats or nylons. All you have to do is listen to some Beatles when he switched to it, for an example. It's funny, because of bassists like Chris Squire, or Lemmy from Motorhead, you'd think Rics are twangy, but that was just them using rounds and playing through Marshall heads. I suppose it can do both. That's great you really found one that fits you the best. You're right about basses not exactly are alike, even if they look like it.

Well it's no surprise I like using the Nylons on a 4003. I think Paul McCartney used nylons more than people want to admit to.

I know he had a set of Rotosound nylons on the Hofner when he did the "Let It Be" album, and "Abbey Road." Image I've been a little afraid to try those on my violin bass, since they are quite thicker, and I don't think it's as well made as the Hofner, though not bad, especially since it only cost me $100.

What gauge strings do have on the Violin bass now?

Mine? It has .40 .50 .75 .90 Rotosound RS77M Medium Scale flats. I had to used medium scale because of the bridge. The Ibanez can use short scales on it, because it has a regular fixed bridge.

I've had to use medium scale strings on short scales also. On the Gibson SG Std.'s because of the bridge also.the Mustang Pawn Shop series used mediums as well, with being strung through the body.

Yeah, although I've seen that GHS strings corrected that problem by making their strings a little longer to compensate for that issue. I wish they'd all do that. That would be cool, and prevent a lot of issues with people accidentally buying the wrong size.

Strings should be one of the more simple things on a bass, but that do complicate them when it comes to scale lengths.

Now that I'm playing a 33.25", and a 34", it's long scale.

The Ric has a slight shorter scale on it?

Yeah,... the 4003 is a 33.25" scale length, with a 10" radius fretboard. A half inch flatter on the fretboard than the 9.5" Fender. The Fender, and the Ric are so close in the scale, and radius I don't notice much of a difference. The neck on the USA GL Jazz having the custom shop rubbed flat crown, makes the two necks feel very similar. I really like that on the two. It sure makes it easy for a picky, PITA player like me to settle in with these two basses.
