Yeah, I suppose there weren't too many budget options, other than something like Silvertone, was there? I remember even back in the 80's and 90's that most amps weren't cheap, especially for bass, unless you got a used Peavey, or a Crate.

There was Kent, Silvertone, etc. for me.

Kent made amps, too? I've heard of their guitars. In fact, I do believe I had once spotted a Kent hollow body bass in some shop, many moons ago, when I started playing. It was red, and one of the rare, early sighting of that type of instrument. They weren't too big in the late 80's. In fact, pretty non existent around my parts. Of course, there were plenty of neon colored pointy headstock guitars around. :P You know, you're probably better off that you stuck with mostly 60's music, there was a lot of cheesy crap in the late 80's, with rock music. That was my teenage years, unfortunately.

The Kent combo I had for a bit, before I got the Traynor headband built the cab, had two 12's, and had been around the hard way.

My first amp was a Fender Sidekick 30. Pretty much a practice amp, since I didn't even have a clue I'd stick with the whole bass thing. Go figure, here I am 30 years later, this August. Then I got an old Ampeg B115, which was probably from the 70's, or early 80's, with 120 watts Solid State, and a 15" speaker, and really not much better than the Fender, because the friend that got me into playing bass in the first place, and played guitar, was loud as hell, when he got a Peavey Special 130 combo. That's when I had to break out the big guns, and wound up getting a Peavey Databass combo amp, which was 450 watts and a Black Widow 15" speaker. That amp could keep up, at least.

Now that you mention your 30 years playing, it's coming up to 50 years in the first week of August 1968 I started to play the bass, and never looked back. Something felt right about playing a bass. I did know it wasn't the bass I started out with though.

Wow, basically you are 20 years ahead of me then, or you started 20 years earlier than me. Of course, you're also around 20 years older, so that would make sense. Although, I've heard of people taking up an instrument even in their 50's, or whatever, and doing something with it. A good example is there was a blues musician called T Model Ford, who didn't start playing until he was 58, and made quite a name for himself, but he died a few years when he was 90, and was playing up until then. I intend to keep going until I drop, which hopefully won't be for some time. At this point, what the hell else am I going to do? Watch TV? That $@!& will kill you. The worst thing you can do when you get old is to stagnate. You got to at least keep your mind going, and try to move around a little.

I'm 66, and I was 16 when I started on the bass if I remember right. Close enough I guess.

Twenty years, funny how things work out over time. I sure don't miss playing the drums, or six stringer guitars, that's for sure. The Bass was my niche.

Yeah, although sometimes I don't mind playing on a 6-string, too.

If you can play both, that's great. I wish I could also, but it just isn't my way.

I think I'm so-so with it, but it's there, if I have to. It's actually been months since I've picked up my Tele. I guess I really only play it when I need to. Maybe I should actually put more time in on it, I'd probably be better with it.

It's kinda' the way it is when you mess with it more, the more familiar you get with it.

The funny thing that technically, I've been playing guitar as long as I've been playing bass, since I had a nylon string acoustic that one of my sisters gave me when I started out, but I barely ever put any time in out it, since I found it a lot more difficult to play. I guess eventually, I picked it up more and more, until I learned a few things here and there. It's like anything else, you have to put the time in on it.
