Well, I suppose you could say it's like a sculpture.

In a different way, yep.

I'm using an Ampeg PF-500, and an SVT-410HLF. ImageImage

Full on Ampeg half stack. Pretty nice looking rig, I have to say. 8)

The specs were so close to the 800, and it has a headphone jack, and can be played without a load. I got some credit back on my card.

Wow, you can run the amp with the headphones, and not have to be plugged into a cab? I have to say, that's pretty killer. That's something I could have used a couple of years ago, but then I got the MXR preamp pedal. I wanted to use an amp to record, but only hear it through headphones, because the volume from the cab would have been problematic in some cases, like late night recording, etc.

You just unplug the speaker cable from the head, the power cable from the wall outlet, take it to another room to plug in your power, your headphones, and bass. No load required. The volume has to be turned down for the headphones usage.

I have to say, that's pretty cool. 8) I suspect the PF-800 has the same feature, since it too has a headphone jack. That could be something to consider as a worthwhile replacement to the Orange, since it does have roughly around the same power, and it would cost what I could probably get for selling the Orange. Of course, there's just the matter of even doing that.

The PF-800 is $599. My PF-500 runs $399. They can keep the cost down with the PF's having only one channel, but the EQ has a bout everything needed to do about as much as a two channel head.

AMS has a non factory sealed PF-800 for $539.95, and they've had scratch and dents for around $500. That's probably what I'd go for, if I could. Do you think it would be worth selling the Orange over that, or is the jury still out on your Ampeg? I'd only be running it at 8 ohms, though. All I have is an 8 ohm cab, and that would be 400 watts going into it, which isn't exactly wimpy. I'd be giving up the switchable impedance of the Orange, which pretty much gives me full power into any cab, but I'd be gaining that Ampeg tone and EQ ability. I suppose I could also possibly add an additional cab down the road, if need be. That would mean extra stuff to haul, as well. A lot to even think about, that's even if I can sell the Orange. Either that, or I somehow come into a huge amount of cash, and I could just buy whatever, and keep the Orange around. Who knows if that would ever be possible?

If it were me, I would move the Orange for the Ampeg. If for some reason you needed or wanted to sell the Ampeg, or trade it in, the Ampeg should move better than an Orange. No bias to it, just the way it is. If I were still on the road, and needed to make up a band's gear, one of my first choices for bass amps, AMPEG. What can I say, they survived Sunn, etc., and are still seen on a high number of stage venues, small, and LARGE.

That's true, and now that Yamaha owns the brand, I suspect they'll should be doing pretty good. Yamaha generally has excellent quality control, from what I've seen. Maybe I'll try to post the Orange on Craig's List again, and see if anyone bites. I can't really risk taking it to a music shop to consign, even though it might move faster, because I do have a gig coming up in August, and I'll need that amp.

From when I saw my first Ampeg in 1969, I'm an Ampeg user after all these years. Image

You realize that next year, 1969 will have been 50 years ago. A half a century. Kind of blows my mind, especially since I was born in 1971, thus pushing 50, myself. Getting back to Ampeg, where they expensive back then, or did they have cheaper models?

I don't recall the prices, but they were expensive.
