Those short scale basses can be pretty quick, once you get use to the smaller neck on them.

Very true. I like the design of the Fender Mustang, it's more comfortable to play than most other short scales. Out does the Gibsons hands down.

I've never got to play any Gibson short scale basses other than a 1968 EB-0 bass at some music store in Florida, many moons ago. Other than that, just the Epiphone version, which I would have got, but I found out the tuner was broken on it. I couldn't seem to tune the E string on it. There was some jackass that went in there and detuned the E on a lot of the basses, and that store was a bunch of hacks to begin with. Needless to say, I'm not sorry they went out of business. They were aptly named Daddy's Junky Music. :P

The Gibson EB's, and the SG Std.'s, when I played them, always had the top of the body pitch forward away from me, so it caused me to lean forward over top of it. After years of that it wasn't comfortable enough to play them anymore. The Mustang plays like regular long scale Jazz. Hachaa'!!!

How did that Pawn Shop Mustang play? I remember you had one. You know, the one with the huge humbucker on it?

That was one Fender I probably should have hung on to. It was a great player. That Humbucking on there was exceptional. I wasn't crazy about the the blue racing stripe on the Olympic White. It was nice in a way, to have the string through the body. Not that it really matters that much on a short scale. I guess if I had to choose between the Pawn Shop Mustang, and the Mustang PJ, I'd go with my PJ. The PJ uses short scale Nylon strings, where the Pawn Shop used medium scale Nylons. But they are both very playable Fenders.

I went ahead out of curiosity and looked to see if there were any for sale on the used market, but nothing came up. I'm involved in a psychedelic garage rock side project and something like that would be cool for that type of sound, I think. I do have the violin bass, though. It's too bad they stopped making that whole Pawn Shop series. I thought they had some cool ideas with those.

I totally agree with you about the Pawn Shop series. It was a nice series. One thing I didn't think I'd like on the PJ's, until I had a hands on look at the Bridge on the PJ. I do prefer the new Bridge on the Mustang PJ, over the Bridge on the Mustang Pawn Shop series. The Saddles are solid on the PJ's Bridge.
What is the status on your Violin Bass's repair to playability?

I'm waiting until we get together with the drummer (should be pretty soon) so he can take a look at it. He was Vernon Reid's guitar tech, so he did that stuff professionally and he also offered without me asking, so I figure that would be my best bet. I've never messed with any sort of hollow-body, so I figured let a pro handle that, since they are pro at doing that stuff. I got a lot of things that need work, that's for sure.

You just somewhat recently acquired the Violin, around Christmas. Any warranties apply to it?

I don't know. I only paid $100 for it, so it wasn't some massive investment and I'm pretty sure it just needs a tweak with the truss rod. It didn't start doing this until after I changed the strings. Maybe the cold weather effected it, too. I'm not in a climate controlled environment, either. This place can play hell on my instruments. Very cold and dry during the winter and hot and humid during the summer, although not as bad as summer in Florida. I also live a 1/4 mile from the beach.

Changing weather conditions are a problem.

Yeah, not so much in Florida, though. The only thing I ever had to worry about was a jack corroding from sweat getting in it, and that was only one bass I had that happened with.

I run the A/C all the time with my on, and off respiratory issues. The desiccant packs are in each case too. So I don't have the higher levels of humidity in the house to mess up parts. Also, I don't play live on stage like you do.

You have it climate controlled pretty good and I know Florida doesn't get cold and dry like it does up here. You should see what this crap does to my hands in the winter. I think I know what beef jerky feels like. :P

I remember my mom's hands would dry, crackup, and bleed during dry times up north.
