The Combo Head ll, can be removed by the mounting screws in the cab. The one thing that they didn't do, was attach a top cover on the head. It's designed for the Mini Cmd Combo cabs to keep weight down, and give a bit more open exposure for more air flow for ventilation, and keeping it cool in the cab.
It is the same head in design, as the Markbass, Little Mark lll head, just no top panel. I guess if the mounting screws on the cab lined up with the head's, and the top panel of the different head didn't get in the way, maybe.

Hey Mr. Nylon have you gone back to a full Ampeg rig :) I was on my way to buy the Ampeg PF800 when I saw that Long-McQuade had an SWR 750X being blown out for $650. (the deal of the year for me)... The Ampeg PF 500 is currently the hot ...gotta have it amp in my area as is the Gallien Kreuger MB Fushion 500 & 800 ... I see that you also have an Ampeg Heritage 4X10 cabinet (nice !!) as you know I'm a fan of 10" & 12" speakers ....So tell us what brought on the change from Mark Bass & what are your thought on the PF 500 & Heritage cabinet .... :)

Hi James; I edited my post since it was posted. I couldn't handle the Ampeg PF-500 head. It had more highs, and mids. The lows were very limited. I compared it with a Markbass Little Mark lll head. The Little Mark lll destroyed the PF-500.
The HSVT-410 cab is a monster.

Hmmm....... so it's back to Little Mark,... at the end of the day do you think the Ampeg PH500 is over hyped or do you think it was just not the amp head for you? how does it compare to other Ampeg heads you may have owned? & thanks for the offer of the Ampeg PH500 but I'm in bliss with my SWR 750x & my SWR Headlite :) how do you like the Heritage cabinet?

The positive first. The Heritage cab is great. The Markbass Little Mark lll does sound great through the Ampeg cab. 500 Watts through it. Plenty of bottom, and everything else too.
Ampeg heads, I'm getting less enthused by them. The 7PRO is ok. At least the PF-500 I have is a disappointment. If they all sound like mine, I wouldn't recommend it. Just not my sounds from the PF-500. It's almost like, run about any other head, other than an Ampeg head, through an Ampeg cab, and it a good sound.

Yeah amp heads are so personal,.... as I said in an earlier post the PF500 is a popular amp or rather a steady seller in my area according to the sales guy at L&M who I spoke too.
I tried an Ampeg PF 800 & thought it had that old school vibe about it but ....I'm an SWR fan & when I saw that Long & McQuade was selling or rather blowing out a 750X at 50% off...... I couldn't resist .....& that being said I'm sure there's many people who are going to read this post & say they'd prefer an Ampeg over an SWR amp any day ........it's so personal like a pair of shoes IMO.. :)

 James, I would steer clear of any Ampeg amp right now. Especially the PF-500. The failure rate on this amp is something approaching 40%, and has earned it the nickname of 'Potty-Flex' (instead of porta-flex) because it goes 'potty' during the first set and takes a dump on stage.

I didn't know that the current Ampeg's had a high repair rate,.... I wonder who's over seeing quality control in China ? I know that Gallien Kreuger was starting to have a high repair rate too & last December moved all production back to Calfornia ........ The Sales guy at L&M has said to me on many occaisons that he rarely see's an SWR amp come back for repair ....they're built like tanks .... guess I got one of the last tanks :)

That's what I've just heard about the PF-500 too., Right after I switched back to the Markbass. Some were having smoke issues. I went through that with a Marshall head. No fun. Ampeg 7PRO heads are having issues with cutting out also.
The Markbass is made in Italy, and like your SWR head have no problems. It's getting to be a real PITA, just an amp head that works the way it's supposed to. Brand names don't always mean that much anymore, as they did in the past.

So true mr. Nylon .....a brand name doesn't mean much anymore ..... I think you've done good by going back to Markbass ,....from what I've heard they're very reliable & I've noticed that they're getting a lot of reputable jazz artists on board to spread the Markbass word :)

There's a Markbass Little Mark lll Tube I'm going to look into. If I get the LM lll Tube, I'll use the regular LM lll that I have as a back up for the tube monster. They do work.
