Whatever. It's all in the books now. Very turbulent times, that was for sure.

Yeah, at least you survived it. A lot of people didn't, sadly enough.

Anyway, getting back to the original topic of this thread (have we actually ever posted about that? :P) I just realized, albeit 3 months late, that I've already had the Ampeg PF-800 head for a year now. I had gotten it back in January of last year. It was sounding pretty good the last time I had used it with the violin bass, which was a good thing. Certainly better than the Orange head did with it. By the way, it's been two years since I had last used the Orange head and played my last gig. It must have taken me a year after that to sell that thing, then. Funny, it seemed like a lot less time than that, but time is funny like that, sometimes.

That's a fine looking Ampeg PF-800 there Paul. I bet it does sound great. That's cool you've had that a year now. It really is a good deal to have rid yourself of the orange. Orange are more performance, and in most cases loud performance amps. You can testify to that, just with the lesser EQ settings on it, as compared to most other heads, you may have dealt with. The PF-800 is a prime example. My little Rumble 100C may have more EQ than the Orange you had.

Your Rumble does have more EQ options than the Orange did. The Orange wasn't horrible for it's power, but it just didn't work out well with the violin bass for some reason. I guess it was OK with the Squier Precision that I briefly played through it, but I was also dealing with the 18" speaker cab, and it's problems with my situation, and I got rid of that before I got the 4 x 10" cab, I think, or was just hung up on the violin bass. I think it was a situation of not having the right gear working together.

The truth is I should have held on the Squier Precision, in retrospect, that's the one thing I regret, even if I wasn't using it at the time. I'm glad I was able to get the Ampeg as a replacement, though. I know I was lamenting over the Fender 800 (still would swap for one in a heartbeat) and GASing with the Gallien Krueger, but after playing the violin bass through it, it was working for me, at least. The real test is when I finally plug the Squier Jazz into it. I really want to see how that works out.

The Orange, and the Carvin would have been fine for doing say, MSG, or any other large hall, or arena. The Orange isn't really a finesse head. It's a full balls power unit, made to peel the paint off of the walls. I really don't thin in the long run, that fulfilled your needs overall. If the Carvin had a decent 18" in it, I'd would have loved to have heard it wide open, to compare with, here it comes. My All Time Favorite 60's Live Amp, The ACOUSTIC 360/361.

As much as I loved Ron's Kustom set, when he went to the Acoustic 360/361, it was totally awesome. It turned him into a higher level bass player. His sound was there with the Larry Taylor, Mark Andes etc. Yeah,....... my Gibson EB-0 sounded fine through it also. That Humbucking is still in my personal opinion the best for a bass. Jack, and Felix knew what they were doing.

Well, I did load a Celestion into that 18" cab, but I think that speaker was really designed to be for PA subs, which was probably designed more for throwing out a lot of low in with a part of a full system. Yeah, if I was set up like you were talking about in some huge place, then that would have been probably ideal. I guess it's like the equivalent to hunting rabbits with a .44 Magnum, using that rig in that small room. The low end was pretty intense if you stood ten feet in front of it. Just ask my girlfriend. :P

I still got the power with the Ampeg, albeit 200 less watts at 800 (like I'd even crank either in the first place, since it's pretty beefy at 400 at 8 ohms,) but I also have more finesse. I can fine tune things a lot better and get a cleaner tone, especially with the violin bass. Fenders are clean like that, too. I suppose there's a reason why they're used in recording studios for years, and it's hard to get one to sound like arse.

I know what you're saying Paul. I went hunting for varmints, with a Sharps .45-70 Govt. buffalo rifle. I had the Ampeg 7-PRO head, with the SVT-410HLF. Not to mention the Super Bassman heads in my 13' X 11' room. I couldn't go too loud at all because of the area size of the room, like we talked about before.

Hell! It only took me just a couple of months short of 52 years to be where I kinda' started out with. An EB-0, with an amp using a 12" in it. Like you said earlier about going around. ME, ME,ME! Image

Yeah, I know what you mean with those high powered amps and a small room, and that's your main use for them, although I think you can make it work with the 4 x 10" cab, especially if it's 8 ohms, and even that SVT-7 Pro head, with the volume and gain down a bit. It's pretty much what I'm running, sans any preamp tubes. and 200 less watts into 4 ohms. If I had a 4 ohm cab, then that might be a different story. I guess tubes usually sound better when you're pushing them a bit, though.

It's like you have come full circle again, in some ways. Sometimes, life can do that to you.

I agree, I'm the one that will say turn it down, that's what the controls are there for. But its just a waste for me to have a Super Bassman used for my playing. The $1,800., I can't justify either.

That's a good point, especially if you're usually just playing by yourself.

Thats all I do anymore, and I'm not complaining a bit. I play what I want, when I want. The Fender Rumble 100 suits me just fine also.

You don't think you'll ever do any more studio stuff again? That Rumble 100 seems to be a great amp, especially for your purposes. I wouldn't mind one for when I play bass in the living room when I watch movies. I probably wouldn't need an amp that big, since I wouldn't have it blasting over the TV volume, but it would be cool, otherwise. Maybe the 40 watt one would be better, but it doesn't have that 12" speaker. I suppose a sing 10" would be OK for that purpose, though.

No, I don't think I'll be doing any studio works any more. It's a bit funny though. You would never guess where my playing was used in certain pieces. No, I'll not let on to where they are either. A bit of self satisfaction I can keep with me, just knowing I was there for it.

I really do like the Rumble 100, as I've mentioned before. For my preferences, and over the years loving 12's, its down right perfect. The 100 watts in it is grand as well. The EB-0, and the 100 are so well suited. I would have to think your Talman would do well with it as well. Image

Hey, you never know if you do or not, even if you think you won't. Stranger things have happened. That's cool you've got to do what you did, though. I've managed a few things that I'd never thought I'd do, myself.

It does seem like a great amp. I think pretty much any bass would sound good through it, since it's a Fender. By the way, did you ever play a Jazz through one, or you never had a Jazz at any time you had one, or access to one.

Surprising you asked that. The 100 is what I played through on the floor at a store, because I trusted the sound of a 12".

It was an honor to studio the bass that I did.
