It's kind of screwed up they wanted to take him out in the first place, considering the enemy was afraid of them. I guess he was too effective with his mission. Politics, I suppose.

They didn't like his tactics that were too much like the VC, but he was winning.

Yeah, and I suppose he was also a bit unhinged. :P Then again, it seemed like everyone in that movie was kind of like that. It also seemed kind of post apocalyptic in a way with those bases, or outposts they stopped at. There were no CO's and they were just there in some sort of survival mode on their own, in the middle of the jungle.

Some of them were in total chaos, to say the least. Lt. Col. Kilgore was off his nut too. In his own way.

That's true. How far was that movie fictionalized from what you experienced there, would you say? I know it's not based on anything that actually happened, like that movie "Hamburger Hill," or something like that.

I never saw Hamburger Hill. Apocalypse Now, was some what of a fantasy. But there were some parts that of it that had its merits. It depended on where you were at, and what you did there.

That's true. The one thing that I've noticed that with everyone I've talked to that was there, you all had a different story, even though you were in the same place.

It's a diversified terrain there. Our guys were all over the place also.

Yeah, one guy I talked to was in Special Forces, which probably had a different mission going on than what you did most of the time, albeit fighting the same people. I'm not 100% sure, but I think my cousin might have been a tunnel rat, which was also another thing. Crawling around inside those tunnels with a flashlight and a .45. That sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon. I was watching this video on YouTube, which was something like the 10 worst or most dangerous jobs in the military, and that was one of them. That, and being a flamethrower operator, which I could understand. All it would take is to get hit on those tanks, and you'd go up in a fireball.

I had enough of a problem keeping my sanity doing dog walks, and some Huey drops to the only thing they told me was be back here to this LZ for extraction. You know somethings up when you get a partial terrain map, and told to carry your canteen, and extra ammo. And that's it.

Did you ever have to deal with those tunnels, where someone had to go into one and look around? Were those usually in villages, or something?

I never did one. But they were hidden pretty well. No real set place if they were found.

I guess they had a pretty elaborate system setup going on down there. I've watched a few programs about that. I'd hate to have to have to have been the one to have to go down there, though. I guess they had to do it that way to find out. You guys didn't have remote controlled drones back then, not that they'd probably even work with that situation.

Thank God, most of the wholes were too small for me to fit into, and the guy who carried the M60 were somewhat exempt. Another good reason for carrying the M14. I backed up the M60, and was just too damn good on the left second in on dog walk formations.

Yeah, you were using the same round, and everyone else was 5.56mm. I was watching a video about someone that had a Vietnam era M60, and was shooting it off. He was making slushies out of a pile of watermelons. You ever operate it? I imagine carrying that thing around all day would build up your upper arm strength. I think it's something like 23 pounds unloaded, or something like that.

I did give it a go for part of a day. Fred the regular "Thumper", M60 guy, and I swapped out for a couple of hours. He was a bigger statured guy, and definitely wheeled it like it was a part of his body. I scored a few hits in the first hour with it. I had already been trained in basic with one, so I kinda knew what to expect when everything went wrong at that time. I was glad to get my 14 back after that part of the dog walk.
