I imagine with that pickup on the EB-0, you are getting some good low end coming out of that. I've been typically more into a clean bass tone, but I've been wanting to experiment more with some distortion. Not a lot, but here and there.

I really do like the tones from the Humbucking. And it's working well with the Fender front end. Like I said before, and I believe you did too, Fender does some fine amps still.

That pickup has a pretty strong output to it, as well, doesn't it? So what would you say is the differences between this amp and the Hartke?

The Sidewinder Humbucking Pickup does sound fine through both. I like both 12" drivers, but after comparing the two, the Eminence paper 12" has a tone I'm more used to hearing my style of playing through. The Overdrive Channel is easy to quickly adjust the mix on it, over the slide bars of the 7 band EQ of the Hartke. A single push of the button changes from Vintage Channel, to Overdrive Channel. Or a foot switch to change channels if you like. 26 Pounds lighter is a substantial factor as well. Price wise straight up, sticker price that is, the Rumble is only about $30. more than the Hartke. The wattage is increased on both from their 75, 100 watts by the EQ's on both. Not that I'm probably ever going to use the XLR line out, but it's there on the Rumble. Bottom line for me between the two, I just like having a Fender, and if I need repairs on it, Fender is pretty easy to have it worked on.

Considering all of what the Fender has going for it, I'd say that's a really nice choice, especially if you can dial in a good tone right off the bat. That's also true with the availability of Fender everywhere, which they are.

I'd like to think it was a better move to eventually go with the Fender. It had been itching at me for a while now to go with one, if I did stay with a combo. The Hartke was one notch below the Fender, as I looked at it anyway. Damn near even though.

The one thing I'd give Hartke props for is that HyDrive speaker. I always thought that was pretty cool, and I did like their all aluminum cone cabs. Of course, there's pros and cons to everything, being they did have a lot of extra weight to them, which can be problematic in certain situations.

It ironic sometimes, if a player doesn't know what speaker he's playing through, he may not know the difference between the two, or which one he is playing through.

That's true. You know, when I first started out, I didn't know crap about any speakers, or whatever they even did. Come to think about it, I didn't with strings, either. Actually, the whole thing with strings, I didn't even pay attention to most of that, until maybe the past 10 or 15 years or so. I might have tried things here and there, but mostly just bought whatever was cheap and didn't care that much, I guess. It's weird how you can ignore something like that, when it's the most interactive component to your playing. Without them, you're not making a sound, or producing any notes at all.

I got going on early on with the strings, and speakers. It set me up for the road applications, that I didn't have a clue I'd be doing. I didn't see the future to well I guess.

I'd say that worked out in your favor, though. By the way, when you started playing, what did they even have for bass strings back then? You remember? Obviously, there was no internet back then, so you'd had to get whatever a shop carried.

The shops did carry a fair amount. I don't recall what they carried overall though. MAE did carry the Tapewound Nylons at the time. That's where I started with those. If they didn't have something on the market, they ordered it for us, I loved the old shops. The same with record and tape stores, they sold concert tickets too.

I know what you mean with the old shops and record shops, since they more or less still existed in my teens, when I started getting into music and all of that. I remember even record shops carried stuff like bass strings. I bought a set of Dean Markley rounds in one, at one time, because they were open, and I need them.

What made you get into using the tape wound strings? You just happen to see a set and decided to see what they were like?

Something like that. I think probably asked Charlie if he had some deep bass strings. It was 51 years ago I bought my first set of Tapewounds. I don't recall the brand.

Maybe Gibson, perhaps? I know Rotosound had those back then, but they were in the UK, unless they were importing them to the US at that point. It's funny, when you said Charlie, I thought you meant the VC for a second, there. Somehow, I doubt you'd have had that conversation over there. :P
