Well, we do have to hold everything together, otherwise the song might fall apart. :P

I always liked the bass in a song, even before I took up the bass. The best thing I did in music, was take up the bass. Before I moved out of the house in high school, I used to love moving the things in my mothers China cabinet from the bass shaking the walls in my bedroom. Image

Oh yeah, there's just something about the low end shaking the walls. 8) That's the one thing that just feels awkward to me when I play guitar. I don't have the low end coming at me when I play it.

It's a loss of control to not be able to shake the earth when you play.

That's true. It's certainly an alien thing, especially playing live. That was something I had to adapt to, but I did do it. Then you have people like John Paul Jones, who can go from all kinds of instruments like they are second nature to him, and they are. It's funny, he's probably just as famous for being on the keyboards as the bass, maybe even more so. "Stairway To Heaven" was probably their biggest, or most famous song, and he was on keys for that song, although he did put down bass on it in the studio. Live, he obviously used bass pedals for that.

I know I couldn't see myself playing anything but the bass. From past instruments I've played, surely not the accordion.

I wish I could play keys. I do play guitar (more or less) and have messed around with a mandolin and a ukulele, but I think if you play one type of stringed instrument, like bass, you can more or less work your way around other ones. If I could, I'd love to collect all kinds of stringed instruments, even if I never could master them. I think it would be fun to just mess around and experiment with them. You know, run a banjo through a cranked Marshall stack and a flanger pedal, or something like that.

That's somewhat like on keyboards as well.

Yeah, Jon Lord used to run his keys through a cranked Marshall. That was part of the Deep Purple sound, I think.

As did Steve Knight of Mountain. he used two Marshall 200's. For whatever reason, the Marshalls worked better than the Sunns did for his keyboards.

Why do you think that was? The Sunns didn't sound as good with his keys?

The Marshalls are I think a bit more of a mid to higher tones, without altering parts to give them the deeper tones as Hendrix wanted, for example. More suited to more keyboard ranges played.

I can understand that, just like Sunn amps were probably better suited for bass. The original idea with Sunn was the guy's brother needed a better bass amp in the first place.

Yeah, the Sunn was pretty much intended for bass, like the Marshall was pretty much intended for leads. The nature of the beast, so to speak. The Kings Men, playing "Louie, Louie".

Yeah, I've read the history about that. It's funny, the FBI, or some sort of feds actually investigated that band because of that song. Did you ever hear about that story? I guess someone thought the lyrics might be obscene or something like that.
