What did they even have with 15" speakers there, anyhow? I suppose there's the Rumble 200, and that one 150 watt Hartke you used to have, and maybe a cab or two. I think Ampeg also has a combo with a 15" in it, which is also 150 watts. Usually, the bigger combos have 2 x 10"s in them for some reason.

I honestly didn't pay too much attention to the 15" combos. But they did have a MarkBass 15" Combo. I guess if it sounds good with a 12, a 15 would work fine as well.

Oh yeah, there's the Mark Bass stuff. I sometimes forget about that, since they are only available at Guitar Center. I sometimes waffle around with this, but I think if I were to get another cab, it might be a 15" speaker one. They are usually cheap enough and handle a good amount of power on their own, and are relatively compact. I guess I kind of miss them, too. Actually, I miss a 2 x 15" cab, but those things are frigging huge, and would be difficult for me to transport, unless they are making them a lot more compact and lighter these days. I'll probably be just sticking around with the 4 x 10" cab, though. :P

It would be interesting to see an overall comparison, if they were both from the same company. 2X15, And 4X10. Throw in the devil's advocate, the 2X12 cab. I think the 2X15 cab would be a surprise to its close weight, but just a bit longer in height, where as the 4X10 cab is more square. Possibly close in its surface area, just in a different configuration. Maybe.

The one problem (at least with me, because of my situation) I've seen with 2 x 12" cabs, at least for me, is they've seemed to be on the expensive side, at least new ones that I've seen. Even a lot of the single 12" speakers cost more than the single 15" ones I've seen, including the Rumble versions. Their 15" cab is $50 cheaper than their 12" one, and the 15" speakers usually handle more power.

Although, I've seen a few 12"s that can handle at least 300 watts, as well, which is a good amount, I think. That one Hartke 12" HyDrive cab you had was pretty cheap, but it was only offered in 4 ohms, and was 300 watts, which might be problematic for me, because I'd be running 800 watts at 4 ohms, with my current amp. They do have the other one that comes in 8 ohms, but it also costs a lot more, even more than the Fender 15" cab.

Like you said, it would be interesting to see/hear a comparison of the different size speakers, and configurations, with your EB-0 bass, or whatever else you'd want to test out. I guess that's not always possible, depending on availability of such things, but that would be cool if you can. You know, I've seen videos of string comparisons that are pretty cool. They did things like try out different brands of flats on the same bass, so you can hear the differences, if there are any. I was watching those the last time I was shopping around for flats. Come to think of it, I think I've seen those with nylons, too.

That was one thing I liked about the 112b Hartke cab. 300 Watts @ 4 ohms. I didn't have a head that exceeded 300 watts. I know what you're saying though. The Ampeg SVT-212AV peeked out at 600 watts, and was a 4 ohm cab. That wouldn't work with the Rumble 800HD, or the Ampeg PF-800. I almost wish I was as non caring about watts and impedance as some players are. Some of these folks use whatever they want, and have no visible issues. If I did that, I'd have an amp meltdown that would make Chernobyl look like a lit birthday cake candle on a cup cake. Image

Yeah, you had the HA2500 with it at 250 watts, so it matched up perfectly. I suppose using the 600 watt cabs with the 800 watts at 4 ohms thing wouldn't be too risky as long as you're not gunning it on full blast with it, but there's also using bass frequencies, besides volume, too. That's one thing thing that always sucked about those Carvin 2 x 10" cabs I've had. They claim to handle at least 400 watts, but they'd always fart out a bit by themselves (not paired with a 15" or 18") and I wouldn't even be putting that much wattage into them. That's what really put me off to 10"s originally, before I ever thought to plug into the Rumble combo, with the 2 x 10" configuration. That was a surprise to me. I never thought those would have the lows a 15" speaker would in that format.

Yeah, that's a good idea to do so, I think. It makes things safer to run, I'd say.

Absolutely. I'm still amazed though when I hear some players giving advice to others saying "don't worry about it."

Yeah, there are some things you might be able to get away with, at least on a temporary basis, but you wouldn't want to push your luck too much, especially during a gig when you need it the most. That reminds me of the one thing that was wrong with the Peavey Databass combo I had, which I didn't know about at the time, because I was a newb.

It was a 450 watt combo, but I think the Black Widow speaker that it came with might not have handled that much on a continuous basis, because I did wind up frying it at least once or twice, because I ran that amp at a good volume. They had this replaceable baskets on them, so you didn't have to replace the whole thing. The truth about that whole thing is there probably are better speakers I could have used, that maybe handled more wattage, but I had no clue about any of that until later when I had more playing experience and learned more about the gear I was using.

I think that amp was about the only one that I really ever fried a speaker with, although I've fried the transformer in an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro head I had, which is a lot worse, and certainly more expensive to have fixed.

Frying heads, you're getting into Marshall MB Series now.

I think the Ampeg was my fault, though. I didn't know better at the time, and I did try using it for it's preamp to record on a 4-track, and I didn't have it hooked up to a cab. I found out later, that's a no-no. That was a very expensive no-no, too. I remember it cost almost $300 to get it fixed, and that kind of cash wasn't easy for me to come by at the time. The funny thing is you can get a decent amp for that much these days. Bass stuff wasn't that cheap back then, unless you bought a used Peavey. It's amazing what they have out now for bass.

A head with no load to it will do it every time. I was uneasy about not having a cab hooked up on a couple of the D class that were supposed to be ok to run without a load to it.

Yeah, I didn't even know about that, since no one ever told me back then, and there wasn't any internet to read about this stuff. I've read about that you can do that with the Class D amps, although I know you couldn't with the Orange head, even though it had the Class D power section. Maybe it was because of the tube preamp it had. I did read about it, to make sure when I had it, and also found out I couldn't use any 1/4" speaker cables with it, either. At least with the Ampeg, I can used 1/4" speaker cables, and run it without a cab, which I have yet to try, by the way.
