Well, that's not good, if you still have to pay more, but have a substandard speaker to deal with. I wonder what's up with that? That company go out of business, or they just decided to cut corners? At least those HyDrive speakers seem to work really well.

To be honest, if I had the cash, I'd certainly consider those, since they can also handle the power, and I do like how their original aluminum speakers sounded. The one negative with the all aluminum speaker cab is the weight in comparison to the Fender I have now. They have a new version coming out that's supposed to be like the ones they put out in 1984, that weighs 79 pounds, and the one they've had weighs 88 pounds, for the 4 x 10" versions.

My Fender is 62.5 pounds, and that thing can be tough to handle moving in certain situations by myself, like stair cases, so that's something I have to consider. There are casters, but those can only do so much, unfortunately. I'm usually on my own with hauling my gear, so I have to always keep that in mind. At least the HyDrive 4 x10" weighs the same as the Fender, but it is also $$$.

That's what I'm appreciating more about my Combo, but it stays in place anyway.

That's true. It's not like you'll have to haul it around from place to place.

Yep. That's the truth.

Although, with the new Class D heads that fit into carry bags, the head option is pretty doable. Especially, if you can get a compact enough cab to go with it. That also gives you a lot more flexibility, since you could just bring the head, if there are available cabs where you're playing, or that sort of thing. That, and if something goes down, you only lose half of it (either the speaker or the head,) instead of your whole rig down. I suppose there's pros and cons to both configurations, like anything else. I suppose in my situation, I'm probably better off with separate components, then a combo, although, I have done a lot of gigs with combos, with the Rumble 350 being the last time I used one. The last gig I played was with the Orange head. and Fender cab, though. Before that, was the Rumble, at a radio station. It sounded amazing in that situation, too.

In the past, my biggest gripe about combo amps used on the road, or just around, was a failure of part of the combo. Where the traditional Amp head / cab was more workable in a failure situation. Replace the failed part and move on. Unless you have a spare combo to just plug in, and use it quick. In the late 60's, one advantage to having two, or three stacks, if part of one failed, easy enough to disconnect it, and use the others.

That's true, and as you well know back then, they had to have multiple stacks of cabs and amps, since they didn't have the type of stuff we got now, especially PA equipment.

The PA's really changed the way stage gear was used.

That's true. Back in the 60's it was pretty primitive. I suppose The Beatles changed all of that, because things got so huge with concerts and all of that, and the screaming fans.

Actually from what I remember reading it was more the Greatful Dead that changed PA's. Starting with The Acid Tests.

The 70's Wall of Sound just took it to absurd levels.

One of the cooler things they did during the 80's and 90's was wire their vocal mics to contact mats in front of them so that the mics were muted until someone stepped up to sing. At the keyboard stand they had motion sensors like on your garage so when the keyboardist leaned in to sing it would turn his mic on.

I've seen pics of that PA system The Grateful Dead had. Yeah, that thing was certainly extensive. :P I can only imagine how long that took to set up.

They had 3 of them built and had to hire 3 road crews. They'd play one show then leap frog it ahead 2 stops on the tour.

I guess they went down all the time too.

But for people who want to own copy of a piece of the magic there is this:

There's a picture of the stage set up here on their main page:

From what I remember reading the company was started by former Dead roadies.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing this before. I'll bet that 2 x 15" cab could move some air. 8)

Yeah. I bet it weighs a ton too.

Fun fact. The Alembic Preamps are based on the Fender Twin Reverb preamp section.

Yeah, they started off getting involved with Phil Lesh and Jack Casady with modifying his Guild Starfire bass. You ever play an Alembic? I did one time at a music shop, back in the 90's. I plugged in into a Trace Elliot rig. That was an expensive setup. :P
