You think you'll like the Ampeg setup a lot more?

Safely, as much, or more.

It sounds like it's better suited for your situation, at least.

IT is. I was dreaming about using that powerful head in my playing area. I did say area, not arena. I could have been more than satisfied with a Fender 100T, if they would've put out a Bassman 212 Neo cab to go with it. It aggravates me, since the Bassman 212 cabs were so well used in the past. The only disadvantage to those cabs, the 212's were inline. The cab was too narrow to have a Bassman head sitting on top of it set vertically. So horizontal was pretty much the setup for them.

Wasn't the original Bassman head a lot smaller in size? I have actually seen a couple of those in person, but it was many years ago. I've actually seen the Ampeg version of those in a couple of shops a couple of times. They were actually priced pretty cheap in comparison. It was called a B-25 head. You remember those?

I found a pic (actually, there were several) of one:

Yeah, on the B-25. The early Bassman heads were if I remember correctly, were smaller than the SB.They were usually 100, to 135 Watts. Everything was scaled down in them.

The ones from the early to mid 60's were 45 then 50 watts, as well. It seems like 50 watts and lower was the standard around that time, up until the late 60's, wasn't it? At least from what I've seen with a lot of those earlier amps. I guess they had to up the volume because of things like The Beatles, with all of the screaming, and the primitive state of PA equipment.

I have to say, that B-25 would make a killer old school amp for maybe like a lower volume situation, like a studio, or small practice room kind of thing. Guitar amp, as well. I looked at the going rate of them now, and they are about double for what they were back in the day, but that's typical with a lot of vintage stuff, I guess. Still, it's cheaper than an old (or new) SVT, or even a V-4B, but that's also because it's 50 (although, I've seen them saying 55 watts) watts, compared to 300 or 100. I've also read they had more headroom than a Bassman did. I'll bet the Stones probably used them, besides the SVT's, maybe in the studio. I've seen pics with Keith in the studio playing through some sort of Ampeg combo, when they started, or after they were using them.

Fender Bassman heads, and cabs were also pretty popular for the more local bands to be used as PA's, until Kustom, and Shure released their PA's. The Kustoms were magnificent. The Shure didn't have the power, PA's needed to really compete with a loud rock band. The Shure was ok for coffee houses, bars, and on the smaller side venues.

I suppose it was all just starting out. I imagine if it weren't for the whole "Beatlemania" thing, the need for bigger and louder amps might not have been a thing, you think?

I honestly think Beatlemania may have had a bit to do for louder music, but there was a definite trend starting. The Beach Boys were getting volumes up as their shows were doing bigger venues. The people a couple of years older than me were turning on to louder music. I can still remember the first time I heard a loud electric guitar at a friend's house locally.
The Kingsmen were stating to need louder, more powerful amps just to fill the larger venues they were playing more of. Conrad, and Norm Sundholm's SUNN became the American Marshall, at or about the time Jim Marshall was starting on his assault on the ears of the world. 1963 - 1964 was the Sunn's first creation.

Yeah, that's the thing, with more and more people getting into the music, you need bigger places to play, and those small 18 watt amps can only do so much. Sure, maybe a small club you can get away with it, but not so much larger places, unless you have enough PA support, which they didn't yet. I'm sure all of that was trial and error, too.

They were coming up from scratch. At least with the gear you have now, it's also because there's some 50 odd years of experience behind it, and other advancements in technology. Of course, even that has it's problems, too. That stuff has to go through it's growing pains as things did in the past. Class D when it first came out had a lot of issues, just like your original solid state stuff. Remember those solid state Fender amps in the 60's? I guess they had some problems, because that was new technology, and they probably didn't have all of the bugs worked out yet.

Funny how I'm somewhat feeling ok back with a tube head again. Power it up, be on standby for a minute or two, and Play.
