I looked up the Highway 1 Jazz Bass. The specs say that it comes with Vintage Alnico 5 single coil Jazz Bass pickups. I have owned a couple of Jazz basses and I like the pickups that come with it. Of course: the sound that you may be looking for may be different than the stock Jazz pups. If you do change them, keep the originals.

A wise decision. Many players succumb to the "Mastercard Maestro Syndrome", equating the expenditure of more money with better tone. But that's often not necessarily the case. Sometimes a minor adjustment or a string change is all that's needed to achieve the results desired. If you like the bass's current tone then go with your stock pickups and enjoy it.

string change and a good setup might be a big help.. But some pickups might alter the tone.. some give a bright tone and others are darker..

Boy!
That's the truth!
Although I changed the pup's on my MiK Strat (they were real bad) I'm keeping the MiM Jazz pup's - only modification was to properly ground them.
Other than that, they are fine by me.

I put S.D. basslines quarter pounders in my left handed MM Jazz. I love them they are great for my garage rock band.
