I want either the Fender Custom Shop 60's pickups or the Original Pickups on my American Jazz Bass, but i don't know how each one sounds. Can someone help?

Go see if any music stores near you have any good examples. Best way to find out. Personally if I were fitting after market PUs it'd be a set of Lindy Fralins. I Love the tone you get from their J pups! I'm told they're as close as you can get to the pre CBS tone too, though whether that's true or not I don't know.

I`ve lingered around this site for awhile, but felt compelled to register when I saw this thread.

I agree with the poster who told you to get Fralins. They`re very balanced and even across the strings, and have a warm and "open" sound to them. Once they`ve been installed in your bass, it`ll have an "alive" feeling that it didn`t have before. After trying out Fralin pickups in my own bass, and hearing the tone in person, I now consider Fender`s pickups too dark for my taste (dark isn`t necessarily bad, of course).

Most folks complain that $160 for a set for Fralins is too much to pay, but I don`t buy into that. I don`t understand how someone could put a price on tone.

At the end of the day, you`ll probably be happy no matter what you do...after all, you`ll still own a Fender jazz bass!

Thanks for the tip. If I got these Lindy Fralins what do you suppose I would do with the circuitry in my bass? It has an S-1 switch and I'm not too sure about how that works. Thanks...

That depends on whether you like the S-1 switch. You can keep all of the wiring as is, and just install the pickups.

I don`t care for the S-1, so I replaced everything: the pickups (obviously), pots, wiring, tone capacitor, and input jack. While it wasn`t necessary to replace the majority of that stuff, It`s something I had been wanting to try for a while. I just followed the wiring diagram (which can be found elsewhere on Fender`s site) for a pre-S1 American Standard J-bass. I sold the original stuff on that famous/infamous online auction site to somewhat offset the cost of my little project.

Since I first posted a reply the other day, I did some research on the 60`s Fender pickups you asked about. They seem to get decent reviews by people who`ve installed them in their basses. I may consider buying some in the near future to compare against my Fralins. Until I do, I must still recommend the Fralins. As a "bonus" Fralin will re-wind his pickups (for free) to suit your taste if you`re unhappy with the tone.

Keep in mind that you have to do what you think is right for you, and I`d encourage you to read reviews on and research pickups before buying them, regardless of brand.
