I would try a stack not a combo , more versatility , you could add on later if need be. Buy the best you can afford, lots of used equipment out there from guys with more MONEY then Talent , try craigslist, . As far as gear, their is so much good stuff out there! Mesa is great , just a little expensive, try markbass or gk or an older ampeg (usa) , stay away from the cheap stuff though , you'll regret it later. I use a 4-0 and a 1-15 with a markbass head, i take either the 4-10 to smaller gigs and the whole stack for larger shows, very versatile. Hope this helps.

Definitely a stack is ultimate EVEN if its a budget stack like my Laney RB 9 head and 4x10 and 1x15. It still rules over all the best combos that hit the stages around here as I usually get to play through everybody's gear eventually at the Jams. The beauty of a stack is that you can buy the parts individually if finances are tough and change the head anytime you want and if something fails... rare for sure, you can swap it out. TONE and power. Nothing produces the low tones like a good stack. The speakers need enough cubic space of air behind the speaker to work well. Supposed Exceptions to the rule like tiny amps like Markbass combos still can't quite keep up without PA help. In a pinch, some combos have speaker outs and you can drive the stack with it as well as smaller heads will still work well on a stack. Like 50 watts would get through most gigs in bars and bigger with PA support. A single cab and head is only somewhat bigger than a combo and easier to load sometimes. (Lift a heavy combo into a hatchback and you'll know pain.) (The 4x10's can be a bit heavy tho) Some guys like a 1x15 and a 2x10 its compactor/lighter and really almost as good really.

Some rigs match a combo with matching extension cabinet. This can be good for some but the combo is heavy as usual.

Why do you think a stand up bass cant be the size of a fiddle? Eh? Low Frequency's man......

Oh and I won't argue for a second that a Ampeg SVT and 8x10 won't make you cream...It will. You gotta have a support team and a Van for that stuff. All those tubes.... a retubing will cost as much as a decent SS amp. I am also betting that when I try my SUNN Solarus 40 watt TUBE amp (At techs for recapping) on my STACK, It will sound great and be quite loud and SUNN reputation for "Clean" I'd be hoping.

There's only one amp worthy of a Jazz Bass IMO......

i hear ya... i traded in my Ampeg BA115HPT for the Mesa rig and just cranked my back out humping that 410 cab into the back of my SUV last week.... i know, i know,... lift with the knees....

i found i had the Ampeg almost pinned all the time during practice and i went thru two of them in a year (bad batch maybe?) so when i dropped it off for warranty repair i traded up to the Mesa...loads of power... but i detest moving the cab....

BTW, when i played as teen in the 70's my first head/cab setup was an Acoustic rig... i miss it.....

For some years, I have had great results with a Peavey 410 TVX bass cab and old Peavey Mark VI or VIII amps. They have the 9 band graphic and chorus effect.
