I traded to get a 2008 American Standard Jazz bass a few months back. While at first I was "fascinated" with the new tones that I could get out the bass, I begin to miss the simplistic tone of a P-Bass. Having been a P-Bass player for so long, I was having a difficult time dealing with my "new tone". Rolling off the bridge pickup gives you somewhat of a P-Bass tone, but it is still lacking. I did some research, and found that the DiMarzio Model J pickups(DP123) give me a P-Bass tone exactly like a P-Bass, but with a Jazz Bass. JMO

I used Jazz Bass for three years... and I am sure, a Jazz Bass can sound like a Precision Bass.. but you can have differents sounds and not right results with wrong amplifications... You must try, but I am sure, you can found the sond you are looking for....

The Seymour Duncan Hot Stack for Jazz pickups I mentioned in my earlier post are hum cancelling.

I have 2 of them in my J-J bass, and 1 in bridge position on my P-J bass.

The Precision pickup in my P-J is Seymour Duncan Vintage P. It works great with the J stack in bridge. Vintage P bass tone with extra tones available due to the bridge pickup in various combos.

The J-J and the P-J sound a lot different when the neck pickup of either is emphasized. If I roll off the neck and focus on bridge pickup, they sound closer.

As I said earlier, I can get the J-J to sound similar to a P bass if I play around with EQ, etc. If everything is equal, the P neck pickup sounds different than the J neck pickup.

I suggest you find a good Fender P-J bass if you want the P tone and are not happy with the sounds of a bass with 2 J pickups. Otherwise, try some hum cancelling J pickups to avoid the buzz.

The American Series Jazz Basses had the S-1 switch; it really helps to get a P-Bass sound by wiring the two J pickups from parallel to series. This feature has been discontinued with the introduction of the new American Standard Series line in 2008.

I got one of these on EBay (and for a good price) and it does come very close to a P though not quite. In my case though, close enough for what I do (occasional need for "the P sound") to not need an authentic P bass.

How I determined that was by playing my Hwy 1 P-Bass and then the J-Bass with appropriate setting of the S-1 using the same amp settings. For me, it was close enough that I decided to sell the P-bass. It may not be if you play a lot of tunes that were done with a P and where you need to sound just like the original.

So my answer would be: you can get a non S-1 J to sound "similar to", and you can get the American with the S-1 (I think they made them only one or two years) very close. But if you need dead on and your audience has the ear to notice, you'd need a real P.
