I have a MIM 60s jazz bass with fender 60s pick ups. I mostly play a fender hwy 1 p bass 3 pc rock band.I like the sound of my jazz. but it doesn't quit fill out the room like my hwy 1 p bass. I really don't want to sell. but i need a bass that can hang like a p. For amps i use a markbass LM11 and a 4-10 and/or a 15 cab. Will a humbucker help? maybe a different value cap? open for suggestions.
Thanks in advance

You can't make a jazz sound like a precision completely. You can get close with the neck pick-up soloed, but it won't sound just like a P or add any additional output. You could try different EQ settings, but if that doesnt work you should change the pickups. The 60's jazz has MIM standard pickups which arent that great. I would suggest upgrading the pickups. Whatever bass sounds better to you should be your main bass.

Absolutely, a Jazz Bass can sound like a Precision Bass, but not the other way around. That's the beauty of the Jazz for me.

The American Series Jazz Basses had the S-1 switch; it really helps to get a P-Bass sound by wiring the two J pickups from parallel to series. This feature has been discontinued with the introduction of the new American Standard Series line in 2008.

Try a Tech 21 SansAmp Bassdriver. You can get so much more out of you equipment it's unreal.

Yeah, there are a lot of great toys. I think I own most of them. They all look so pretty sitting in their little boxes and displayed on my shelfs.

Of everything I've tried, the SansAmp is the most consistent, always comes back the same.

The only other toy I'd like to try is a Palmer Tube Emulator. Can't find it anywhere, some places claimed to have them until I called and then they didn't have them anymore.

There's always something out there that will make us crazy.

I've never had the opportunity to try one. If there's one at my friendly neighborhood Guitar Center, I'll give it a go. It's about time to harass them again.

I brought up the Palmer Tube Emulator because it was a standard fixture in John Entwistle and Geddy Lee's rack. That's how I got turned on to Tech 21, after reading some old interviews and learning the details of their stage gear.

Thanks for the tip. I still have one empty shelf.

thanks for the reply's. I still havent found a answer. I was thinking of a stacked humbucker and was wondering if any one has any experience with them. I dont need anyones advise on why a j is better then a p, ive been playing bass for years and years and know the sound IM after. I also dont want to use any boxes , dont like how they degrade my signal. Have tried many effects and the tech 21 sansamp, and have eventually got rid of them. Thanks

I have Duncan Hot Stack for Jazz pickups on a J-J bass.

With everything the same, (equal bass/amp EQ, speaker cab, etc) the neck pickup does not sound does not sound the same as a vintage style P pickup. It still sounds like a J pickup to me.

If you experiment with the bridge pickup volume, bass and amp EQ, volume, etc, you can get closer.

Add a processor or effects devices, and you can get even closer.

Lots of variables can add to the equation , IMHO.

I solved this problem strictly by accident ,I put a down payment on a 2010 American P-bass,when all of sudden a 95 American p-bass hit the new isle and ended my search.
I also have a s-1 switch Jazz bass and with the switch on the pick-ups sounds like a great p-bass,but on my P-bass the s-1 switch doesnt do a bit of good,it sounds like a muffled bass, but the jazz bass brinhs it home all with a push of a button.
AGAIN its what you like,Its a matter of taste, play a few and go from there.

back to the original question... i have a GL Jazz and when i dial down the bridge pickup i get pretty wicked hum... any way to get the P sound from a J hum/noise free? would replacing the pickups acheive this?

also, i am looking at a 50th Anni J... will it be prone to the same issue as my Geddy Lee? i play in a blues band and really want to get that fat low end, but love the neck of a jazz....

I have not noticed any hum whatsoever from my '09 MIA Jazz. Granted though, I haven't had it thru my Ampeg BA115 up at all loud yet (no more than two). Still, so far the Jazz is pretty quiet.
