So, I was browsing CL and found this awesome (in my opinion) bass for $350.

I gave myself a crash course on Plus basses the morning I saw the ad. It's obviously a 90'-93', five-string, Gotoh tuners, not sure of the bridge (Gotoh or Schaller?), funky jazz body and knob configuration. The previous owner swapped out the Laces and Kubicki electronics for EMGs. HOWEVER, it came with the original pickups and EQ, so that was a big factor for me. Anyway, I snatched it right up.

Now the catch. The wood on the back of the neck around the skunk stripe is splitting. It's almost as if the truss rod is pushing the stripe out:

It looks like there have been previous repair attempts, so perhaps this is a chronic problem with the instrument? It doesn't seem to affect the playability or sound, but the sharp edge sliding back and forth against my thumb is disconcerting.

What do you guys think?

That's a nice find and a great bass for that price!
It's very cool that you got the orig.electronics.

About the truss rod strip. You probably should have that fixed because it will just get worse if you do nothing.

I had this problem on a 58 precision one time. My guess is that the bass was taken in and out of temperature extremes causing woods of different densities to shrink/expand at their own rate. I never had a technical problem with the wood expansion and eventually the neck was just sanded flush to eliminate the ridge.
