okay,i'm just gonna put this out there..
the only fender five string bass i like it the deluxe active v jazz bass, i dont like the other five strings mainly because i fine the tuners ugly, and the one tuner on the opposite side is a major turn off...fender guitars have all the tuners on one side, not four on one side and one on the other...the deluxe active v has them all on one side and it looks the most normal, that extra tuner on the wrong side makes the bass look silly, and it just doesnt look like a fender...also the four string versions seem nicer and less ackward...the deluxe active v looks and feels the most natural...feel free to reply people

The American Deluxe P-Bass I have actually has the 5 in line tuners also but, my Roscoe Beck V is 4+1 and I don't think it takes anything away from the bass' aesthetics. That being said, the "Beck" is a signature model so and not a Jazz or Precision, so the tuner being on the "wrong" side is the last thing you notice when you see one for the first time. Both great basses and as with all great things.... Fender no longer makes either one.

The one thing I don't like about the "deluxe V" ( Made in Mexico) is the little gotoh tuners. I like to have something a little more substantial to grab onto when tuning a bass.

My jazz has 5 in a row which I prefer to the 4 over 1 look. That being said, I can think of lots of good acoustic/structural reasons to go 4 over 1, or even 3 over 2 (like Lakland, which is an ugly headstock config imho).

The 5 in a row is the best visually but not the best for sound, which is probably (hopefully) why Fender changed it.

I don't have a 5 string, but to me the 4 over 1 is more visually identifiable as a 5 string. I sometimes have to look twice to see a 5 in a row headstock.

I have a P-J kit bass tuned BEAD, but if I ever buy a 5 string I would want a 4 over 1.

Nothing wrong with 5 in a row, 3 over 2, etc, to each their own.

I like very much the 4+1 config, it looks a lot better than the 5-in-line layout.

Almost all 5-string Fender basses came with the 4+1 tuners, except the Deluxe Active and Squier Standard 5-string Jazz Basses, which still had the 5-in-line config.

The "standard V" and "deluxe zone V" (MIM) came with the Gotoh Minis. Same thing for the Plus, American Standard and American Deluxe basses of the 1990s.

The "American Deluxe V" I have has the deluxe hipshot tuners. Sort of between the size of the Gotohs and the elephant ears. I can only assume they used these because they needed the room. Great little tuners without being too small. I have a Six-String with the gotohs and they just aren't as smooth. I don't know if, with all the tension of the strings on a bass, you need a larger gear?

The Hipshot Ultralites were introduced on some American Deluxe basses in 2006.

Many US Deluxes such as the Jazz Bass V and the southpaw lefty Jazz Bass IV still had the Schaller Lite-Bass tuners which came stock on that series in 2004.
