I posted this a while back but as a newbie, I must have done something wrong it wasn't listed. I've played P basses previously; and am interested in knowing if a 6 string P bass is a possibility. The relatively new 6 string Bailey J Bass looks great, but could this bass be used for rock-type music? I've never played a "J" bass but maybe this would work O.K. I would appreciate any input from you folks!

Im sure the J bass would be fine for rock music but for the money you would spend on the bailey one you could probably just get the custom shop to make you a 6 string p bass. But do you really need all 6 strings? especially for rock bass playing you probably wouldn't use the high C string much.
I'd definitely consider the American standard 5 string p bass.YMMV

Bartolini makes a 6-string P/J pickup set. EMG, Norstrand and Lace also build a 6-string split P pickup if you're interested. I suggest you check these pickups out.

Thanks to all that responded to my question re: 6 string "P" bass. A 4 string would suffice; but I like to have the ability to use the same bass to have thee the boom of the low "B" with the ability to use the high "C" if I want to. Granted; most rock songs are fine with a 4 string bass. Never thought of a custom shop option and for some reason never thought of a pick-up swap! Thanks again!
