The Humbucker is a real pounder. Honestly, the necks are getting so close in size as compared to the earlier P Basses. At the nut, the J Bass neck is 1.50" and the P Bass is 1.62". I have small hands and short fingers and don't fell the difference. It goes back to the sound and the body shape.

The P pickup on my P-J bass is naturally louder and heavier sounding than the J neck pickup on my J-J bass.

P basses without a J bridge pickup naturally sound muddier to me than J bass, but I still love the tone of P, J, or P-J.

As far as articulation and clarity on a Jazz bass, I think it has a lot to do with the individual volume setting on each of the J pickups, and where your fingers locate in relation to the bridge.

Playing finger style on my J J bass, I play the bridge pickup on full, neck pickup lowered to varying degrees. I get plenty of clarity. Playing slap style, I use both on full, still lots of clarity.

On P-J, I emphasize the P pickup if I want that fat thump. If I want more clarity, I raise the J pickup volume and maybe lower the P pickup some.

Although some P basses have a J bridge pickup and/or thinner nut width, some J basses have a P pickup in neck position, and the JB Special had a P body.

The hybrid basses blur the distinctions a bit, ha.
