Musicfox,
If you open the plate with the volume/tone knobs you can see if your bass has shielding.
Also, do you use a speaker cabinet that has a horn/hi-frequency driver like SWR, Eden?
I took my bass to a music store just to try it in different amps and the noise is definitely a ground/shielding issue.
I was hoping to use this bass this weekend for my concert tour. I will have to use the Sadowsky which is totally shielded instead.

Yes Laney horn tweeter 4x 10's and a 15 with active on and treble full and mid and bass flat it is quiet. I will eventually look at the pots area for shielding when more curious. Sorry to hear your having trouble you've eliminated bad house wiring by trying multiple locations for ground issues I assume. besides your other bass is quiet same amps right? Same wiring in walls.

If I turn my practice amp up full there is a normal type single coil buzz.... There will always be that tiny bit way open volume buzz... I have never seen single coils that didn't buzz a little when amp wide open..less with fingers on strings. So you may have issues with what some of us find acceptable....My P basses would buzz too as I recall.

Perhaps Mike Eldred can answer to all your problems. Why not telling him about these issues? Give yours a try!

The only thing you can do at the moment is to contact your local Fender dealer and tell him about your problem. Your bass is under warranty and should be sent back to the Corona plant for reinspection. If the bass has flaws such as a lack of shielding, the Fender staff will proceed to all the necessary actions to fix the problem.

Mike Eldred (pictured below) is the Custom Shop manager and director for sales and marketing.

Image

Mike began building guitars in 1979 at Charvel® Manufacturing in San Dimas, California (later to be called Jackson® / Charvel). He was the first employee Grover Jackson hired, and worked on Randy Rhoads’ guitars and many other artists including Gary Moore, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, and Eddie Van Halen. After eight years at Charvel Jackson, Mike left to work at Yamaha® Musical Instruments. There, he was in charge of the Guitar Service Department and eventually became the Guitar Product Manager and the Guitar / Bass Artist Relations Manager, working with John Patitucci, Nathan East and Billy Sheehan among others.

In 1994, Mike left Yamaha to tour as guitarist with Lee Rocker, rockabilly double bassist from the Stray Cats. Mike recorded three CDs with Lee before leaving to devote more time to his growing family. Fender Custom Shop Manager John Page called Mike in 1996 and offered him a position as Shop Supervisor. When Page left Fender, Mike became the Fender Custom Shop Manager. Mike eventually worked his way up to his current position as Director of Sales and Marketing for the Fender Custom Shop, where he works with artists, develops new products, helps organize trade shows, and is responsible for positioning and market development of the Fender Custom Shop.

One highlight of Mike's career at Fender came when he had the opportunity to travel to the Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle to inspect and document Jimi Hendrix’ famed White Stratocaster® played at Woodstock. Every aspect of the guitar was documented and Mike hand-built four “clones” of the instrument which were detailed down to each scratch and ding.

Another highlight for Mike was going to Austin, Texas (along with Richard McDonald and George Blanda) to document Stevie Ray Vaughan’s #1 Stratocaster as well as Jimmie Vaughan’s personal guitars to be replicated by the Fender Custom Shop.

“Working for Fender and the Fender Custom Shop is a dream job for somebody like me who still plays and has been around building guitars for most of my life,” says Eldred. “I still get to build stuff every once and a while, and the whole team are really focused on our mission of building the best that Fender can build.”

Has anyone tried the new 2010 American Deluxe 5 string bass?
They look great on the web site. Are there any reviews in Bass Player or other publications?

Hey Al, Tim Bishop here. I hang most often on the Ken Smith Basses Forum as a Senior Member, however, am new to this one. I just ordered this bass today (totally going blind on this one as I have not played one yet). Will probably receive next week and I'll be happy to give you a report. Appears to be some promising improvements to this bass, so, I am really looking forward to proving that and providing a good report. We'll see.

Did you get the noise/shielding issue resolved? Too bad you have to sell it (particularly if you liked it). I would suspect you won't have any trouble selling it as there doesn't seem to be many available and with the limited finish options. Which finish did you get? Post some good pics. Going street price is around $1,699.00. I hope you get what you need out of it. If I hear of some interest, I'll let you know.

Yes, I had it fully shielded by Mike Knootz. He also did a great job of setting it up. Send me your email address and I will send you some photos.

I bought my 4 string American JB Dlx 6 months ago on a Texas store. I definitively getting some buzz from the N3 pickups. I believe it's a shielding issue so, I want to know if someone else found a solution for this. Is there any factory defect related to the N3s reported by Fender?

Thanks.

You have to have the bass totally shielded. Fender should do this at the Factory but they are not doing it. Maybe if enough people complain they will start doing it. Some other Deluxe owners say they are not getting noise. So, I would take it back to the store to see if they will shield it for you as a warranty issue.

Yeahh,
I'm really sorry to hear that. Even if I lived in the US would already be very annoying to have to take a bass that costs U.S. $ 1,700.00 back to the shop to fix something that should already come factory-ready.
The problem is that I live in Brazil. Now, If this is really a shielding issue I will have to spend more money to fix it. Fender could never do such a thing. If the Fender sells a product and claims that is Noiseless, then there can be no noise.
