Yesterday, I purchased a 2010 Fender American Jazz Deluxe at Guitar Center. Today, I returned it. This bass has the worst grounding hum of any bass I've ever owned. While the hum did dissipate when I touched the strings or bridge, it was still there, and quite audible when playing.

Before they gave me my refund at GC, the tech opened up the bass to see if there were any visible problems. He saw none, but I noticed something interesting. There was no shielding in the control cavity. No tape. No paint. Nothing but wood and poly. That, combined with the "plate" grounding, no wonder this bass had so much hum.

Did I get a dud, or is Fender not shielding these basses?

Here's another interesting point. The bass didn't hum when plugged into an Acoustic amp or a GK, even at max volume. It hummed considerably, however, when plugged into a Genz Benz Shuttle, Carvin B1500, and MarkBass LM Tube 800. Any ideas?

I've never "looked under the hood" of an American Deluxe but a couple years back I built a pair of '66 Jazz Bass clones (one for my brother in 3TSB and one for myself in Lake Placid Blue). For both instruments I selected the Fender CS '62 pickup set and used the full vintage brass shielding sets for both pickup routs and control cavities. These basses sound great and are as quiet as the proverbial church mouse.

My brother's vintage rigs include a pair of Acoustic 370's, a pair of mid-70s Sunn Coliseums, and a mid-70s Sunn Model T. He indicated some "minor" ground-lift problems when using the Acoustics in tandem with the Sunns but no looping problems whatsoever with the Sunn's slaved together.

Shielding kits for the Jazz Bass are available from a number of sources and they're really not that expensive -- less than $25 IIRC.
