Just picked up this pretty sweet J Bass.

Had the original hangtags that corresponds with the serial number as well as reads 64 J Bass NOS LPB.

The bass was re-fretted recently.

The Fender headstock logo is on top of the finish.
The serial number is located on the neckplate which is a 4 bolt style neck.

I can not find anything like her or any info on the hangtags info.

Can someone help me figure this one out? Is it Custom Shop, is it a very good fake?

This instrument appears to be an ash-bodied re-issue of some persuasion -- possibly a '71-'74 since it has the natural finish, chrome pickup covers, pickguard-mounted "tug-bar", and large CBS-era headstock decal but lacks the bullet truss-rod adjustment and the 3-bolt neck introduced in 1975. The "R" prefix in the neck-plate serial number is indicative of Fender's current method of marking the re-issue guitars and basses. It really looks like a fine Jazz Bass -- congratulations.

Apparently, the bass you're talking about is a limited edition-run Closet Classic 1970 Jazz Bass LTD, a faithful Custom Shop replica of the original 1970 Jazz Bass made during the first half-quarter of the CBS era. Only 100 examples were made.

This bass looked as beautiful as it sounds! The two-piece premium ash body had a three-ply white pickguard; the one-piece quartersawn maple neck (’70s U shape) had a gloss urethane finish and white binding, with a 7.25”-radius maple fingerboard, white pearloid block position inlays and 20 medium jumbo frets. The sound came from twin vintage-style Jazz Bass single-coil pickups (bridge pickup is 1/4” closer to bridge than normal). Nickel/chrome hardware, vintage-style reverse tuning machines and an American Vintage Jazz Bass bridge round out the package. Also included were a Fender Custom Shop limited edition decal and certificate, plus a deluxe black hardshell case with orange interior, strap and cable.

The 1970 Jazz Bass LTD featured Fender's “Closet Classic” treatment—built as if it was bought new in its respective model year, played maybe a few times per year and then carefully put away. It had a few small dings, a mildly checked finish, lightly oxidized hardware and aged plastic parts.

Includes all the features of the aforementioned period, except for the white binding and white pearloid blocks on the maple fretboard, a feature which was not available until 1974/75. Jazz Basses produced between 1967 and 1974 had maple fretboards with black binding and blocks.

Here's the same bass, with black finish, tortoise shell pickguard, black binding and blocks:

Beautiful bass. I don't think those are reverse tuners on the 1970 Closet Classic Jazz bass and the original bridge would've had smooth, single notch saddles. I don't know what bridge they used on that bass.

Man, I would love ot have one with white blocks on a maple finger board!

i dont want sound negative, but im not sure its the bass everyone is refering to...i have that 1970 CS Closet Classic LTD Jazz and it doesnt have the 60's style 'Contoured Body' on the headstock, and the neckplate has the Fender 'F' on it...

this also doesnt have a Custom Shop Limited Edition logo on the back of the headstock

also under the pickguard it should have 'Relic' stamped into the wood...

there were only 100 made of this particular LTD edition..
nice bass though
