Hi. I just sold my only bass, my Ernie Ball Musicman Sterling, for a Marcus Miller 4 string. I love love love the Marcus Miller over my sterling. The Neck pickup sounds so gritty and deep. I love it.

However, I've had this thing for 3 weeks and it has this horrible humming sound. I thought maybe it was a grounding issue, but the local guitar shop guy said it was the single coil pickups doing that. Is this true? How do people deal with that horrible noise? It goes away when you touch a metal part/strings, but it's annoying. It's also less prominent when you have both pickups engaged. But that doesnt help me since I love my neck pickup so much more than the bridge pickup. :)

So: anyone have any ideas? Or should I get new pickups maybe? If i sshould get new pickups, help me out here: What do you recommend? And how much does it cost? Can I do it myself?

-Graham

The way the pickups are wired means that if you have one on without the other one, they will hum. This is a common problem with all jazz basses, you could try new pickups but I'd say look at a noise gate or the EHX hum-debugger to try and get rid of the hum.

Ok. The Debugger pedal is cheaper than new pickups anyway. Does anyone have experience w/ it? does it devalue sound quality?

I've tried one out and it didn't change the sound quality at all, it is true bypass too so will not affect the tone when bypassed.

That's the trade off when using single coils as oppose to the MusicMan Humbucker, however you can get hum-canceling pickups for your axe,but I think you lose your mids anf low mids when using this type of pickup, but this IMO .
