I wonder if any examples still exist today?

Probably not. I think would've aged very badly. Dried out, lost there adhesion. Playing them was a self-destruction as you played. The started to unwind in a short time while playing them.

Thought I'd post a few more pix of this one since it's up for sale and I don't know how much longer it will be mine.
I've been playing it lately and I forgot what a great bass it is.
I don't play much bass anymore and I have two so I'm selling this one.
It's just sooo pretty.
I have mixed emotions about selling it but I have a hard time rationalizing keeping both.

That's a nice looking Jazz. I can see why you do have mixed emotions about selling it. I suppose you could weigh the pros and cons of each bass and keep the one you think is best, if you really need to sell one.

You should plug that into two Acoustic stacks and channel your inner John Paul Jones. Of course, there's the matter and expense of even finding those Acoustic stacks. :P

My other bass is a bit more rare.
Not too many of them out there in circulation.
That's pretty much why I'm keeping it over the AD.
'03 MIA Victor Bailey.
Two piece Koa top
Walnut sandwich layer
One piece Mahogany back

The VB has a slightly smaller body than standard and it has just a hint more growl to it.
The neck is also thin.
Not Ibanez thin but thinner than a standard Fender C.

I can see why you're more apt to sell the AD. Both are nice basses though. Selling a nice bass can be tough as you said.

I remember those basses. You know, the body shape and neck of this reminds me of a Precision Bass Lyte. It looks like the same size.

That's ironic, I was just thinking this morning about the Jazz players from back then that played Jazzes. JPJ, Noel Redding, and Dickie Peterson were the first ones to come to mind.
I just realized I lived two years longer than Peterson. He died at 63, in 2009.

I remember when he died. I was bummed out about that one. I never got to see them live, but at least the music lives on. I think he was using P Basses at the end, but you know people go back and forth and all over the place with instruments. I've seen recent photos of John Paul Jones playing a Jazz Bass (a black one with a white pick guard-not the one from Led Zeppelin, which he still has) into an Ampeg SVT stack. I suspect he was playing on borrowed equipment, probably even the bass, instead of his own gear.

I don't think he's ever used Ampeg stuff before, at least not in Led Zeppelin or his solo stuff. He had the Acoustic stacks until they blew up and went to using some early model of Gallien Kruger amps and then SWR after Zeppelin. There were some other odds and ends during the early years, too. Sunn, Selmer, Rickenbacker amps, etc. I've read they said the Rickenbacker amps were pretty terrible. I guess they were problematic. There's a bootleg concert of them I think in 1968 where you hear his amp totally crap out during a song. The band just keeps on playing and eventually he got another one running. I think it might have been at the Filmore, I'm not sure. I've listened to it a few times. It's a pretty good recording. I imagine that would have pissed him off, or at least have been embarrassing. You ever had that happen during the Road Rex days and have an amp or two crap out?
