Yeah, I remember you telling me that. I'm not sure if you like it or not, but I like those gold pick guard, too. My 50's Reissue had one with the Olympic White finish.

I'm not to up on the gold PG's. They do look good on some basses, just not my liking.

You got to start sliding up and down the neck now. It's a fretless tradition.

It's a smooth player, that's for sure. And I do like it not having any "SPEED BUMPS" along the way too.

Or you could do a strange thing and have frets installed on it, like that other thread. I have to say as unconventional as that might have been, a Jazz bass looks pretty cool without the fret markers on it. Maybe that was the idea? I just thought of something even more radial, but I'm not sure how it would sound, or if anyone has ever attempted it, but have a fretless (or remove frets) bass with a fret installed where the markers usually are, like the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, etc. frets. A sort of hybrid fretted/fretless thing. I have seen a bass where someone had the frets removed from the 12th fret and up.

That would be somewhat of an interesting concept for the Frets to be at those numbered locations on the board.

Yeah, I don't think anyone has ever thought about trying that out. You'd probably could get some cool hybrid sounds with that.

Yeah maybe. I would think though, it may break up the flow of the Fretless feel of the board with them on it.

That's true, but you could play a fretted note with a fretless one sliding around that. I'm not sure how that would work or sound. You know, if I ever have some beater bass that isn't anything special, that might be something to try and experiment with. I've never attempted to make a fretted bass a fretless, though. You kind of have to know what the hell you are doing when messing with that stuff. You can really damage your fret board, I think.

Not to sound like a real jerk about this, but Nylon strings would maybe work well on that Fretless / Fretted board. Nylons are fairly stealth on a board.

You know, the idea (at least with what Rotosound claimed when they first made their nylon strings) behind those strings was to imitate an upright bass sound, so those would make perfect sense combined with a fretless, I'd think. I'm not sure if Rotosound is the first company to make those or not, though.

D'Addario says the same about their Nylons able to do Flats tones, or upright bass tones. I don't remember what brand of tapewounds I used back in 1969/1970.

I know the Rotosounds were around back then, but I don't know who else had them. It looks like pretty much everyone makes nylons these days. It appears the black plague is still among us. :P

I think the real Tapewounds, with actual tape wrapped around the strings in 1969/1970 were Gibson Strings. I think, I don't remember that.
