Hello everyone! I'm the proud owner of a brand new, gorgeous MIM Fender Jazz Bass. Here are some pics to show it off. I was thinking of calling it "Nessie", but I might think of other names for it.

+1, it doesn't have to be a Fender or crazy money SKB or Gator. Most music store would have a decent price case for sale. I've been to music shops and they would have a used Fender or SKB for sale, I got an $80 case for $40 (used). It was a Fender molded case - the one shaped like the bass. $40! it's definitely worth every penny. I also have paid $80 on a music store brand. That case have flown more than my kids. Every time I fly back to NYC to record that case goes flying with me. My Fender case that came with my '87, that ones done flying, it travels with the car or van only :)

Hey carloscicero; Like PJB said. That is a great combination on a Jazz. Congrats big time, and the best of times with it. My own opinion, get a case to keep and transport it in.

Thanks! I think so too. I just love the look of a natural-coloured fretboard, plus the blue and sparkly finish is gorgeous. I will get a case soon because, I'm ashamed to say, I dropped it a couple days ago (inside its gig bag which has some cushion but not enough). It's unscathed, fortunately, but I really felt it for my bass! :S

Nice. It's good to know there are some affordable hard cases out there, because I don't have that much money (I used a bit more than I expected to get my first bass). Aside of the case, is there any other additional protection it can be added to fly with the bass? I'm concerned that the airport staff apparently treat checked baggage horribly and may damage the instruments (snapping the neck, for instance), but perhaps the case alone does a good job? I also know that the strings should be loosened to avoid any damage from sudden changes of pressure.

If anyone can correct me, but I/we had a discussion a few yrs back on here about loosening the strings is just a myth. Any hardshell case should be good for transport in the plane's belly. The really nice ones - $200 - infinity - usually have the TSA locks, so the TSA can inspect it even when locked. I had gotten my bass inspected before, they put a sticker saying so on the bass and the case. Mine is an $80 one. I also have strapped my case. You can buy the travel strap at Sears(where I got mine) or anywhere that would sell suit cases. Just for piece of mind I used the strap so if the case latch come loose, it won't dump the bass. As far as sudden pressure change, I didn't play it right away. I let it sit in the house for awhile or room or studio, whichever it is :)

I may be way off on the strings, but I would leave it in tune. As far as the case goes, if traveling with the bass, I'd would advise you to shop around, and get the best case you can afford that the bass will fit in without moving around in the case. A good solid fit in a hard shell case is a good way to make it as safe as you can.

oops, I guess I should've read your post about keeping it in tune b4 replying to Carlos...sorry fj

Cool. Thanks for the tips! I'll shop around to find a case just like that.

Yeah, the strap sounds like a good idea, and so are the TSA locks. Thanks! As for the strings, that might be a myth, but it wouldn't hurt if I did it, right?

Well, that's where the argument lies, less tension, in a plane's belly, is where the neck gets all messed up. IDK, I always kept it tuned.
