I've got a friend who has Jazz Bass guitar, say's he's had it since he was a kid. It's a sunburst and the only numbers on it are 131859, it's in really good shape with just a couple minor dings. I'm trying to do some research for him & find out more about it and what the possible value might be. If needed we can get a couple of pics of it. Can someone tell me where I might find out more about it or link me to some good resources?

Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a help page provided by Fender that you can use to date their instruments.

http://www.fender.com/support/usa_instruments.php

Based on their chart, 131859 would probably have been made somewhere between 1965 and 1966. They used 100,000 range SNs in 65 and then 100,000 to 200,000 between 66 and 67. Because yours is a relatively low 100,000, 1965 - 1966 would be a reasonable guess.

He say's that's not possible, he's had it since 1961 at least. I appreciate the link though, I'll check it out & see.

I think that dating guide can be a little mis-leading and tends to use a rather wide brush to cover the subject.

I have a 5 Sept 66 Precision bass (neck date stamp) that has a serial number on its neck plate that begins with 166***.

The serial number beginning with 131859 could be older than 65 even though the L series serial numbers were out during 1965.

1961 Jazz basses as all fender basses of the time were produced with sunburst as their standard finish. Any other finish was a custom color until the mid seventies, when Fender began to offer other finishes as a standard equivalent.

A shell pink Jazz bass would've certainly been a custom order in 1961.

I think the relic forgers of our day have skewed the collective memories of what was commonplace during the 1960s among Fender basses and guitars. Most players didn't beat the crap out of their guitars and basses.
Belt-buckling on the back. yes, but all of the rusting metal is over done IMHO.

Yeah, some pics would narrow it down a bit.
