AFAIK, the new N3s sound much better than the awful sterile-sounding stacked-coil units of the older models.

These pickups deliver the traditional '70s Jazz Bass sound without the hum while retaining the familiar vintage feel of a good old-school Jazz. Stealth retainer bar for the A string and an extra passive tone control for the passive mode, wide-slot flat head screws on the battery compartment for easier battery changes, classic '70s styling, HMV bridge, all the good stuff in a single package!

I'm not really a fan of modern basses... but this one's worth looking... passive/active controls.. sweet..

It's really possible to put the 2010 upgrades (N3s, new active/passive circuits, new control plate with on/off toggle switch, high-mass bridge and new tuners) on an older American Deluxe Jazz Bass? Could Fender make 22-fret abalone-inlaid compound radius fretboards for these now discontinued models?

Because many players felt the good old US Deluxe designs much better, preferring the modern-looking 22-fret abalone inlaid neck with the dark aluminum 50s spaghetti decal over the 21-fret CBS-styled neck of the current models.

I'd be very careful when exchanging tuners (that aren't originally made for your specific model) and control plates for that matter unless it is cleared by Fender that the parts are universally accepted while modified onto an older moldel like yours. As far as the electronics go, you shouldn't have a problem dropping those into the hood of your bass. But, when you're talking about Fender making a new fretboard for the older bass...keep dreaming Fender doesn't do things like that for the simple reason that that could be the reason why people are leaning towards buying that new bass. As you can see it would clearly lead to a possible drop in revenue from the select crowd that liked older model and also lead the older crowd to start picking up one of these basses for themselves. You could always give the good ol' Fender Custom Shop a call and try your luck, but I wouldn't go into the situation expecting them to do it for a small price if they would even consider. GL

Carvin sells its B4 four-string basses as a complete kit. Fender sold replacement necks and bodies patterned after the American Vintage series models in the past.

The Vintage Noiseless and Samarium Cobalt pickups are already available as separate products. Sounds like Fender would also sell the N3 as future replacement SPA gear as well.

Definitely want to try it out. What does anyone think about this model in an unlined fretless?

Unlined fretless ebony fingerboard like Steve Bailey's signature axe!
