Hi,

just got my son's Standard Jazz back from being set up by the tech at our local guitar store, and the tech said that the neck of Jazz basses tend to be a bit a bit thin and my son should probable go for a lighter guage of strings as he (the tech) had had to tighten the truss rod as far is it would go to get the neck level.

The strings that are on the bass are rotosound 77 flatwounds, 45/65/85/105.

Does it sound like the tech is giving the right advice? Don't know that much about bass myself but the stringss seem to be pretty much medium gauge so I found the comment a bit surprising.

Thanks

Iain

Yes, he is shooting you straight. Necks can be finicky at times, and throwing in alot of variables can create problems. String tension, woods used, build quality, climate, care of the neck/instrument can all play factors. IMO using a standard 45 -105 set of strings should do no damage, but you never know. IME Roto 77's seemed a little higher tension than other flats. Maybe try some light D'Addario Chromes, LaBella 760FL's, or Thomastik-Infeld JF344.

Here is some reading material about Jazz basses and flats.

also give DR flats a try.. they're mediums but round cores so the tension isn't that high
