I am considering purchasing a Fender American Standard Jazz Bass online but I've never purchased a bass online before. Anyone have thoughts or opinions? I'm scared to buy a bass I've never played before :(

[Played same model in store, looking for a different color]

I bought my bass online (american HWY1). I got it with broken pickup :). I have that luck that my friend is know-how and he fixed it.

I bought mine from Musician's Friend, and the service was good. I even had a problem where there was a daily limit on my debit card which was less than the cost of the Jazz Bass, so I called them and they willingly agreed to split the payments in two, to be made over the next two days, and they shipped it in two days after they got the second payment. Shipping was free, and I got it in a week or less, it arrived in escellent shape.
Others may have had problems with MF, I've been dealing with them for a good while, and I find their service excellent. Prices are typical for an online store. I have also had good dealings with 8th St. music and Sweetwater.com.

I've bought two guitars from Sweetwater, one from Musician's Friend and one from a music store in Florida. The guitars all arrived in good condition and with everything that was supposed to come in the case. However, none arrived in ready-to-play state despite each store's claim that they inspect and set up all guitars before they leave the shop.

You are taking some risk in terms of your playability though most makers have sufficient QA so that there shouldn't be a wild and uncorrectable difference between two of the exact same model. Since in my experience you're going to need a setup anyway, that should deal with any small differences between a comparable model you've tried.

I've seen a few horror stories in the forum, but that can happen in a walk in store too. I've personally never had any problem with guitars or other gear I've purchased.

I'm not saying this is the rule, more likely the exception. But I was fifteen back in '01 and didn't know much at the time. I looked on the Fender site and decided based on what I'd been told and the fact that I liked the look, I went to the music store and had them order my Jazz, as they did not have it in the midnight blue in stock. When it came in I fell in love with it, and in the nine years since then I have yet to find another bass that I would rather play. You might get a specimen that's perfect for you, and you might not. As long as you buy from a reputable online dealer, you'll probably be just fine, and at least you'll have the assurance that they'll make right any discrepancies. The only variable is the unique feel that every hand-built instrument comes with.

IMHO, there are a few "must-have" ground rules for purchasing online. They apply to anything bought online, but especially musical instruments where you are considering the not only the sound of an instrument, but the condition as well.

I bought my bass on eBay and it worked out well because:
1) I had good quality pictures of the actual (i.e., not one like) instrument I was buying.
2) Although I had never heard of the seller (an out-of-state pawn shop), they had a very good ranking on eBay.
3) I used PayPal to protect my purchase from fraud, or at least give me some legal recourse.
4) I knew exactly what I was buying and so did the seller. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've seen an instrument incorrectly described either through intent or ignorance on the part of the seller.

I've never bought a new instrument online, but if I was going to, I would probably use theperfectbass.com, because the basses they have on their website are the actual ones you would be buying. The Bass Emporium in Austin also so does this as do a few others. I would not buy any instrument online if the seller refuses to provide a picture of the instrument. Think about it this way. If you go to a store to look at instruments, you expect to see them. You are entitled to the same right online.

I bought a bass guitar in an online store, was the Fender American Standard Jazz Bass 4-string, body color 3 tone sunburst, but it came with a white pickguard, this is right? On the site of the pickguard Fender Fender American Standard Jazz Bass 3 tone sunburst is 4-Ply Brown Shell Pickguard. And why was that the bass guitar that I bought came with white pickguard?

I have seen an America Std. new on line with a white pickguard. They still had the protective film in place, and the Am. Std. decal on it as well. Saw that on Sweetwater.com. Where did you get yours from?

HHmmm... Just checked a number of online stores(Sam Ash,Musician's Friend, Sweetwater) and all the pics of sunburst AmStd Jazzes have tortoiseshell PG's. I don't know why yours would be white.
If it really bothers you much you can change it out fairly easily. That's what I did with mine, changed the white one for a black one on my Jazz with the charcoal frost metallic finish.
