Hello All, I'm pretty new to this forum

already owner of a 1995 Deluxe, I just received a suspect Fretless Deluxe, bought off Ebay

I'm not really sure it's a real Fender

body is dated 1995, neck 1999

S/N is DN813387 which dates the bass around 1998-99

what's your opinion based on the Pics http://www.hotrod.it/foto/main.php?cmd=album&var1=2010%2Ffender%2F&var2=?

the A tuner is lower compared to the others.. and the back is plastic

oh, inspite of the Mexican blanket it's supposed to be a MIA bass

thanks

Based on your descriptions, this fretless deluxe is indeed a late 1990s model. I've also noticed the pickups: they had effectively the infamous single-pole design for which John Suhr is best known.

But Suhr is not the only guy who had built single-pole J-Bass pickups.
German pickup maker Delano (http://delano.de) also offers a similar product, as shown below:

Personally I found the Suhr Humphrey units much better than the single-pole Fender pickups (pictured here on a black Suhr Classic Jazz Bass with John's own 2-band EQ).

I agree, the USA Deluxe bass you've described above is one of the several transitional models made before Fender switched to the Bill Turner-designed dual-coil ceramic Noiseless pickups in late 1999/early 2000.

many thanks for your reply, I was only concerned it was not a clone!

I swapped the single pole PU in my other Deluxe with Bartolinis and I'm pretty satisfied

this one is probably going to receive the same treatment since I'm not really satisfied about the sound

and so.. RW stands for rosewood....

any guess on all the markings? the body has some printed letters like "SOL..."

and there's a strange round carving under the pickguard through the pickup routing...

My personal recommendation is to upgrade the preamp on this baby first before sticking a set of Barts on it.

Aguilar and Audere make high-quality active 3-band EQs. They're all powered by an 18V supply.

The original Fender preamp has been designed by John Suhr himself and is powered by a single 9V battery.

All American Deluxe basses produced after 2002 feature a better preamp with 18V power supply and a 5-bolt neck plate. Five-string basses are presented with 4+1 tuner layouts. As of 2006, Fender stopped offering the pau ferro fretboard option in favor of the more conventional rosewood.

Recently, the line has been updated with N3 noiseless pickups, an active/passive toggle switch, bound compound radiused maple necks with rectangular block inlays, 21 fat frets, high mass vintage bridge, Hipshot lightweight vintage tuners and 70s-era styling. Fender's domestic product page has not been updated yet.

I'm pretty satisfied of that preamp on my 1995 fretted Deluxe while not on this one.. it's not probably the pre but the PUps :)

I have a OBP-3 on another fretless and it's really cool!

I have an Audere JZ3 on my 97 CIJ Jazz Fretless (runs on a 9V battery, not 18V) and I recommend it highly. Makes that wood growl nice.

How many frets on the neck 22? Also there should be NO dot markers on the fingerboard, just on the side markers. It should have fret lines though. Is the body string thru also? What kind of tuners? F logo Schaller tuners or the the black lite weight F tuners?
