Hi,Ihave aquestion about Geddy's bass. Bass player mag(aug.07 )has him saying that he was using his original 72 jazz for the snakes & arrows tour, among others, I thought I read that the 70's basses were called 'disco basses" because the bridge pickup was moved closer to the bridge (from the fender hardcopy catalogue) I don't know what year this happened, but if Geddy is using one of these 'disco basses' his sound would be harder to get, without the right bass. Does anyone know the years of these 'disco basses' thanks :)

I don't know the exact years, but it is roughly 1970-1980. I can tell you that Geddy's bass (his main one is actually his 73) has the bridge pickup closer to the bridge. It definitely makes a difference, but if you get his pickups (fender 62 reissue pickups, aka "original" pickups) and steel strings, you can get pretty darn close.

I played a Geddy Lee bass not too long ago. It really is a beautiful piece of wood and the neck is so fast it's no wonder why his fingerboard is on fire night after night. The tone was amazing too, definately due to the pickup closer to the bridge. His tone on Snakes & Arrows Live was probably due to that Sans Amp Preamp he has and it almost sounds like he's using a littl bit of distortion because it sound really crunchy, especially during Witch Hunt and YYZ.
