This neck has been in my family since I was born. My father played it in his younger years as a professional musician.

I have always wanted to know more about the neck but my father doesnt remember as he has probably gone through hundreds of instruments.

From my own research the serial number (42017) suggests that it was made in 1960 but the head doesnt appear to have 1960 decals on it. Plus it has rectangle inlays instead of dots. It also has a handwritten "8" above the serial number..or atleast it looks like an "8" to me.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum.

I do not believe that would be the serial number. Serial numbers are usually: on the front of the headstock, on the back of the headstock, on the back of the neck on the heel just above where the neck attaches to the body, or on the neck plate.

If it's still visible there may be a date in pencil on the very end of the neck.

IMO By looking at the photo of the headstock and logo, and seeing that it is a "70's logo makes me think anywhere from 1969 to around 1976. Then seeing as the truss rod is at the heel leads me to think 1969 to 1972/73. And that last photo, I cannot see any binding. It may be there, but I do not see any. Binding on rosewood was introduced around 1965/1966, and blocks shortly after IIRC.

A shot of the heel of the neck could provide more.

That is apparently a 1969-1974 neck, if the decal is original. I can see binding in the headstock shot at least on the E string side of the neck.

I looks like the neck went through a flood. It that the case?

It is in rough shape but salvageable.

Have you mounted it on a body to see if its truss rod works?

What is the story surrounding this neck?
You say your father played it for years.
So...
Where is the rest of the bass?

Why was it taken off of its original body?

What year was the neck purchased?

I don't recognize the number stamped on the neck as a serial number.
