I'd like to know what amps people are using in the 200w range. I'm interested in something pretty simple, not concerned with effects, etc. I've used Acoustic and Marshall in the past (as well as Sunn and Polytone - anybody remember those?), and liked them. Anyway, I'm looking for some input here. I'd like to stay under a grand if possible.

i reccomend the line 6 low down 175 or 300 pro i have the 175 and i can get any tone out of it becuase it has the different amp models- rock (standard rock tone), brit (60's british rock like the who and cream), grind (rage against the machine, alice in chains, etc.), clean (just a straightforward simple bass tone), and R&B. R&B has a great jazz tone but it can play stuff like sugarhill gang and others like that very well.

I was able to pick up a Bassman 200 a couple years back, it has plenty of power and versatility. I've also played through SWR's, Ampegs and a host of others and they all sound good and are well made. I would suggest going to a local music store and trying several out with your bass. Keep this in mind, you can never have too much power/wattage. It's easier to lower your volume than wish you had more.

I have a Gallien-Krueger MB150E. Although I'm a tube amp guy,( at least when playing guitar ) this little solid state amp sounds great. If you end up needing more punch at a later date, you can add a cab. This thing is a bit pricey, but worth the money if you want portability.

Have you checked out some of the Acoustic amps? Very nice sounding stuff and you can't beat the prices.

I thought about Acoustic as that was the brand of the last big amp I owned. If you're using one, have you had any reliability issues? The first Acoustic I owned blew out in less than a month (never had the volume above 5), and the larger one I owned died when the something on the chassis in the head broke. After I got it fixed I would put padding between the head and cabinet to insulate the head from the vibrations, or I would just put it on a chair.

My thanks to everybody who's contributed an answer so far. These are some great options. Has anyone used Mesa? I've heard good things about them as well as Behringer, which seemed to be reasonably priced. I leaning towards something with neo speakers so I don't get a hernia dragging it around.

Look into Warwick's CCL 210 ND.
It Puts out 250 watts with neo speakers and has a handy retractable handle.

I had more trouble with the combo Accoustics myself. So far my Ampeg BA115Hp is a real pounder. 220 Watts and it has a real bottom.

I also had trouble with an Acoustic combo (200) amp. It didn't die, but just kept getting nasty buzzes. It a cracked solder joint that was easily fixed though and it's been fine. I have been using a B200B head on a 410 cabinet and it's on it's way to becoming a workhorse. No complaints other than it's quite loud.

Here's my rig. 2002 Peavey Combo 115 and 2009 Ashdown Engineering 210. Never once have i had a problem with the combo, until i myself accidentally broke the fuseholder off the power module. Shortly after that, while setting up for a performance, I managed to knock the whole rig over onto it's face, with cords plugged in and all, picked it up, turned it on, and started the show with no problems. It will take some abuse.

It pushes 200w at 4 ohm (the combo by itself) and 300w at 2 ohm. The Ashdown cab is 8 ohm so i'm getting somewhere around 250w out of it.

Tone is very versatile. And with my fretless jazz i can get a sound that's as close to an upright as anything i've ever heard come out of an amp, short of actually plugging one in.

Even buying both pieces at different times I got the whole thing for around $850. The only down side to it is that it weighs in at just over 170 pounds.
