Hi everyone this my first post. I usually come hear to read all things Jazz bass. But now I have joined because I have question While I was re-stringing my 5 string I found I had to replace the D string tuner because I lost the screw that screws into the bottom of the tuning peg shaft. I couldn't get the screw by itself. I replaced the tuner with no issues other than the new tuner shaft is 1/2 in. longer. While watching Olympic hockey, I was tuning by harmonics, not plugged in to anything, I went to adjust th D tuner, when I put my hand (index behind thumb over top) on the tuner, the loudness of the harmonic increased. When I removed my hand the loudness of the harmonic returned to normal. After repeating the harmonic a few times to make sure I wasn't hearing things, Igot my wife to turn down the tv, and she could hear it too. I put Thomastik flats on my fretted4 and 5. I've never heard of this before. I've since showed it to my band leader (guitar player) and he can hear it too. The bass is not plugged in not even a strap on it. I'd kinda like to know what is going on. Any ideas anyone? Anyone else with this experience? Thanks

If I had to guess, I'd say you were selectively (and accidentally) muting some of the overtone series (look it up) by touching the bass the way you did.

Thanks frettless 5. The tuning peg looks just like the one in the avatar photo. It's just the weight of my hand, I'm not putting any pressure to turn the peg handle when the rise in loudness happens. .......Thanks
