I am looking to replace the pickups in my American Jazz Bass (with S-1 Switching). I am looking for more gain. Any suggestions? I like the tone I get from my Stingray if this is any help. THX.

From my understanding you're searching for a more modern sounding Jazz Bass tone.

The American Deluxe Jazz Bass had SCN pickups recently. The current model has N3 stacked-coils and an active/passive toggle switch.

Another solution is to change the stock J pickups with a set of SCNs or any better-sounding active pickups (Basslines, EMGs and Barts are in my opinion the best replacement active Jazz Bass pickups available on the market). You must also replace the stock passive circuit with a good active preamp, such as the J-Retro Deluxe.

Bartolini, EMG, Demeter, Audere and Aguilar make high-quality active bass preamps.

Note:

Active Jazz Basses had usually 4 or more control knobs, meaning that you'll probably need to cut a hole on the lower bout in order to install a side mount jack. Some active preamps require an 18V power supply.

I second the SCN pickups that are currently dropped in the hood of my Hot Rod Jazz and that I have made as a after-market modification on many other basses that i've owned and they are amazing. If you are looking for something else as well Seymour Duncan makes good replacement pickups for Jazz, Precision and many other different pickup formats. GL xD

err... if its a Stingray tone.. then Jazz wouldn't really sound that similar to a Stingray... since the Stingrays are made up of ash, and the pickups come from a very strong bridge pickup with active EQ..

Do you know if the deluxe snc jazz bass pickup work with passive bass? My is the entry level Squire affinity series J bass. A guy at the guitar shop said I need to change the pot too for the volume control, I am not sure, what is wrong with Squire volume control? This will be my summer project. I need you advice. Thanks.

Not that I'm looking to change out my pickups anytime soon (if at all) but, if I should change my mind, I was thinking of getting some Fender vintage noiseless. Any comments on those or similar pickups. Emphasis on vintage. Noiseless would be a nice extra.

Check out the Ed Friedland video where he swaps out Fenders for the EMG active replacements.

I have also wondered if the SCN Jazz Bass pickups sound good in a passive bass, or if they were designed for use with a pre-amp.

I've had good results with Seymour Duncan Hot Stack for Jazz pickups, along with Fender TBX tone and 500k volume pots.

I might consider some Fender SCN or Vintage Noiseless if they do well with passive electronics.

Putting the S-1 switch in your Jazz bass is not going to give you a Stingray tone. If you want the Stingray tone don't look for it in a Jazz bass

By "more gain" do you mean more output? Pickup output is pretty much irrelevant. Getting a pickup with more output is no different than upping the gain on your amp a little. No point spending money on one just for more output.

If you want a more aggressive pickup, than the SNC wouldn't be bad... but maybe not the best. If you like stingrays, then you want pickups with a mid scoop and lots of high end. A lot of stacked pickups will give you that sound, like the Seymour Duncan hot stacks.

Someone asked if you can put SNCs in a passive bass. Yes, you can. It does not require a preamp.

The Frank Bello Jazz Bass, which is a passive bass without tone controls, has a SCN Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position.

The SCNs can be used on any active or passive J-style bass.

Also check out the tone charts on the pickup manufacturer websites for bass/mid/treble levels of various pickups (if provided).

Listen to/play them live if you can... My stack pickups sound well balanced with certain amps, more middy or scooped from others.
