I tend to rest my thumb on the pickup cover on my Jazz bass when I play. I am interested in installing a thumb rest on the E string side to facilitate resting my thumb when playing with my fingers.
My question is, when thumb rests came as stock, were they mounted to the body, thru the pickguard, or mounted to the pickguard itself? I tend to think that it is mounted into the solid body for a secure install, but am not sure. Where can I get an OEM Fender rest? How about the old style chrome pickup and bridge covers, like the 1970s style ones? I have a 2004 Hwy 1 Jazz that I may want to dress up a bit.

The thumbrests go into the wood.

I have the stock thumbrest on my 76 Precision, and it had been moved to above the E before I got it and then re-installed in the older finger-anchor for paying with the thumb style originally intended for the Fender bass. So, I didn't feel too bad about moving it back up to where it's useful for me.

Anyway, for my Jazz, I had my luthier add a simple piece of clear lucite at the spot where the pickguard screw goes just above the E string about an inch beyond the fingerboard. It's crescent-shaped, about an inch long, a quarter inch high and a slightly longer screw holds it firmly in place. The luthier basically threw it in for free while I was getting some other work done.

This is my modded MIM Jazz Bass. As you can see the thumb rest screws go through the pickguard into the body.

I got the Thumb rest and the Chrome covers from MF.
